Varrelmann's Bake Shop, found on Park Avenue in downtown Rutherford, is one of those hidden gems that most people would simply pass by because it is practically hidden in the mass that is downtown Rutherford. Ordered a German Chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and buttercream icing. This was 2 days before Thanksgiving and I was able to pick it up on Thanksgiving morning... It was simply divine! This was my first experience with Varrelmann's and I will surely be going back to try everything else on the menu.

Called on the phone asked if they had a black forest they said yes. I drove 40 minutes and then they tried to give me a black out cake which is not a black forest. Waste of 1.5 hours of my time. Shady business practice or inexperience, not sure which.

Got a cake for Mother?s Day . It was moist and delicious. Everything about the place is good except the crumb buns are dry, unless you go there first thing in the morning when there still warm. Would recommend! ??????

OMG! What wonderful service! And what an incredible apple strudel!!! There was no over-promising here: Soft apples still with a chew, the flakiest of crusts with a hint of butter. We were blown away, and we?ll be back soon. Thank you Varrelmann?s!!!

I love Varrelmann's! This is a Rutherford staple that hasn't changed for good reason: why mess with perfection? They, of course, have the standard bakery fare of cakes, pies, and donuts that are delightful, but, you *really* want to go in for their butter cookies! They tout an old recipe, and for good reason! Come in and enjoy!

So my this is a picture of my four-year-old daughter?s birthday cake I have no complaints on the design of the cake because it was what I wanted and that I was happy with unfortunately as I went to go cut into the cake after singing happy birthday I smell that the cake it was SPOILED . Wow! I loved this bakery! We went to visit the area, and happened upon this bakery. There were all sorts of options to try: scones, cookies, cakes, croissants, donuts, etc. There wasn?t one dessert we tried that we didn?t like. The blueberry scone had to be my favorite though, well, and the chocolate croissant. Nothing was too sweet or too dry, the flavors were great! Staff was so nice. Would love to come back again!

I honestly don?t know why this place has 4.5 stars. I?m German and was looking for good German bread rolls and bread. The first time I went a while back, I got bread rolls and bread pudding. Best cupcakes I've ever had. My favorite part of the store is walking in and letting the wonderful sweet smell engulf you. They have a wide selection of flavours and a cute environment.

Tried this place for the first time today. The cupcake was on the drier side and frosting tasted mostly of powdered sugar. "Nutty" brownie has no actual nuts inside - just a sprinkling of walnut dust on top. Not rich and fudge-y, which means they probably don't put real chocolate into their brownies but use only cocoa powder. Overall, disappointing. Go to Erie Bakery next door for desserts done right.

Went here to as I?ve never been here and based on the google reviews of 4.5 stars I had high expectations. I?m sorry to say, it DID not live up to my expectations. I bought a piece of crumb cake, some rugula, and 2 chocolate iced vanilla cup cakes. The crumb cake was dry as sand and I couldn?t even eat it without needing some water. I consider myself a connoisseur of local bakeries and this place is a gem! Their pies are chock full of fruit and the crust is light and flaky. Their donuts are an entirely different species than those at Dunnkin Donuts. The brownies are the best I've ever had. All at very reasonable prices.

Always friendly and always busy. The Crumb Cake is the best ever - beats out that Hackensack bakery every time. Heavy crumbs on top of a delicious cake. Buy the whole cake when available, but the individual crumb buns are just as good. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap if need to keep for 1 day.

I stopped in at Vallemann's Bake Shop last month, Nov. 2021..Back in the Area now, was happy to see they are still in Rutherford. Same Warm, & Friendly greeting when you enter. I noticed the Rice Pudding & Bread Pudding.. Looked like my Mom'S old Receipe.. I had to try them. So "Excellent", "Perfection" !!! I just ordered each to surprise my Brother for after our Family Christmas Dinner! The great memories of these Nastalgic Deserts will bring Happy Memories!!!

I have been going here for 25 years! Its very fresh and delicious. Every year I go to The "German" Catskills for a few days authentic and awesome the local German Bakery closed. I now bring pastries and strudel from here to my friends THEY love it.

Family owned bakery for Lord knows how many years. They make pffefernusse holiday cookies which many people crave. The owner and her daughter are usually working and are so sweet and nice. They know many of the people who walk in and the atmosphere is very nice and relaxing.

We love spice cake so we heard they make a great spice cake. Wellll we went to the bakery and bought some but it tasted like a brownie not cake. Will not be visiting again. Also the chocolate icing on it was so thick. Sorry guys.

Horrible, OLD cakes for $19.95. Go to Shoprite, it's cheaper and yummy. I bought a bday cake and asked for writing on it. The girl said she would put it on homemade chocolate and it would be so great. It was the worst chocolate we ever had! The cake was dry the icing was just sugar and the chocolate pudding on the chocolate lover's cake was less than Jello quality. It was horrible I will never go to the bakery again

I stopped here for the first time in two months. Everything has changed, and not for the better. The price of everything in this shop has doubled and the size of all the pastries has shrunk! I googled a bakery on my way home from ny. This was the first one that came up that i was closest too.....and OH MY GOD!!!!! I?ve tried this bakery a few times. Didn?t think their Thanksgiving pies were that good. Lots of filler and not enough apples. Today I went in and picked up a few smaller pieces like danish, buns and a piece of their pound cake ? got it home and most of it is stale and hard.

My son and I thoroughly enjoyed our chocolate German birthday cake. This cake was the best German chocolate cake I ever had in my life! I highly recommend it.

It's a great place! They made a birthday cake for fmy daughter's first birthday and they made a smash cake for photo session! It looked great and cheap. And ask it was incredibly delicious.
