Reviews Summary

Overall, reviews are mixed but lean positive, with many praising the friendly staff, fresh meat/produce, and convenient hometown grocery experience. Several highlight the excellent deli and bakery. However, recurring complaints mention high prices, especially on staples, and occasional poor customer service. Some find the store well-stocked and clean, while others criticize limited selection or inconsistent quality in certain departments (like produce or freezer items). The store's monopoly in the area is noted as a factor for higher pricing. Most agree it's a decent local option but not without flaws.

Customer Reviews

Sullivan's Foods is a very organized store, and the staff is very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. My grocery shopping experience there is so awesome!

It was really good and prices are really competitive with other stores. I like their meat department and their deli area cause everything is freshly made every day.

For being a Small Town store they've got the best meat prices did I have seen in a while in the big plus two is they have a butcher there too so you get some pretty good stuff I highly recommend them

Shop here often. Nice clean store. Great variety. Best produce and meat department. Customer service is usually very nice.

Been shopping here since 2020. Prices are always expensive... but there is one thing I really need. Get rid of that tiny pre-made Sushi and get an actual Sushi chef in this store. Proper, Fresh and Good Portioned Sushi!!! ?? The other Sushi is whack and tastes bad! The Rice isn't ever thaw enough to be edible. Please please please!!!

Sullivan's is a tidy grocery store with helpful, friendly staff along with a good selection of fresh produce, meats and other items. The prices are a little higher than the other grocery stores in more populated areas but sometimes they run good sales.

I arrived around closing time. The woman in charge let us in, only to refuse to charge us for being 3 minutes past 9:00 p.m.

Friendly staff, always have what I'm looking for, great meat and produce section.

Awesome Store Great Fresh meat produce and all kind of grocerys floral fresh Bakery Deli EVERYTHING in 1 store . Just An ALL AROUND AWESOME STORE

Quick and easy to get in and out. I shop here when I don't feel like dealing with the mega stores

1st time ever there. I stopped to get a couple birthday card for my granddaughter and cupcakes. Upon paying I asked the cashier if I can get 2 $5 dollar bills to put a total of $25. in each card she said she didn't have it so I went to customer service and thar lady told me it is Saturday and the bank does not open until Monday thar I needed to buy something to get change. Apparently the $30. I just spent was not enough to get 2 $5.'s with my change. Sullivan's was a once and done next time I will go out

While its convenient to have a grocery store in town, the prices are out of hand. Almost $5 for a gallon of milk is absolutely ridiculous. $4 for a loaf of bread. Don't get me started on the price of other basic items. It's just insane! Meat sales can be pretty good, and the quality is excellent, but the price of everything else is uncalled for.

Store keeps changing brands,no longer available is Prairie Farms milk products.

Always a great selection of meats and deserts

Over priced and spoiled. I try not to go to Sullivan's whenever possible but sometimes it just doesn't make sense to go to Peru for something for lunch. Bought sandwich meat for lunch on January 28, got home realized it was spoiled then looked at the date seen an expiration date of JANUARY 1! On a lot of reviews I see the owner has replied saying they try to price competitively for the market, but how does that work when they are the only store in the market? I can drive to Peru, Ottawa, even as far as Rock

There's always some kind of hardware that is hard to find. Blains seem to have that hard to find piece you need to finish that project you started. Things needed for the farm need to repair cyclone fencing or chicken coop. Feed for the small to larger farm animals. Pet needs. Pet food and toys. Power tools from some of the better-known makers of hand tools. Knowledgeable and Profesional employees.

Good selection of products. Plenty of staff to answer questions and offer assistance. I bought beef stew meat and made a tasty stew at the recommendation of a young man from the meat section who gave me a recipe he makes for his Grandmother.

It's fine. Good selection.

This is a review of the amazing catering service provided for a recent event I hosted. The service was fantastic, prompt, friendly and professional. The food was excellent. Christina was MOST helpful in helping me plan this event and making sure all my needs were covered. A few special requests were completely carried out. They allowed me to enjoy the event knowing they had me covered from planning and serving through cleanup. I'm MOST grateful I went to Sullivan's Mendota for my caterer. They know what the

Overpriced, sale prices are equal to basic everyday prices at Walmart, HyVee, and Save A Lot in Peru 15 mins south of town. It's a good thing we have a Dollar General, DG Market,Family Dollar, and a few small Mexican groceries. Those without transportation or are on fixed incomes generally shop elsewhere in town.

When I have to stop there I always walk by the meat department and just start laughing Talk about price gauging OMG PEOPLE GOGGLE MEAT PRICES AT OTHER STORES I go in there once a week When I need a good laugh!!

Unfortunately it's somewhat expensive for a small town grocery store, I don't think they're 24 hours at the moment like they used to be before covid, but if they haven't changed that could be subject to change. What makes it decent is the cashier's, and the baggers as well. They have a lovely attitude and they're a pleasure to talk with when doing business.

Love having a way to avoid dealing with idiots in bigger towns. Love having a donut shop(kind of) inside here. Love getting homemade meals pre-made for purchase so I'm not eating fast food all the time. Yes, there is a hot food area where they put together chicken dinners to goulash dinners for around $5.00.

If you live in or near mendota, this store has just about everything you need and saves you the trip to Walmart. Clean, well lit store. Isles are organized, and signs clearly tell you what is where. Lovely bakery and outstanding deli. Very polite staff that is happy to help with any of your questions. For a local town store, it's hard to beat Sullys!

The store was clean and presentable. It could have been a little brighter to be more inviting, a little too utilitarian feel. The checkout staff was very helpful and friendly, not shy to start a conversion making you feel welcomed.

My usual store. Has a butcher shop, deli and hot food line and a serve yourself. Clean, well laid out, large isles. Employees are friendly. Not crazy like shopping in the big food store like W**-m***. Prices are good. But everywhere prices are becoming too expensive with this war in Ukraine.

I was in town and stopped to get 2 items. I just don't know how this little town of Mendota has such expensive prices on milk, bread, baking needs, vegetables, ect. It's so bad. I feel terrible for the people that live near this store... it's $$$$ 1/18/23 It's okay if you just want to get a couple of items. Kind of pricey. People are nice.

No good. Seems that employees don't know how to interact with consumers. Very rude . It's a store that i felt was very high priced and had no customer service with consumers. I've work in food industry for most of my life and dealt with younger (college students) employees but these employees are older adults .no excuse for their attitude. Some were nice but few.

Decent prices, nice produce, easy to follow aisles with clearly marked product sections. With their savings card you can find some great deals. I found a $25 dollar "manager " special for $15. I have been looking, and bam, Sullivan's had it just as you enter. Their impulse buys are many, but priced so you don't feel guilty buying them.

Love their deli. Great salads as sides for meals. Good chicken. Fresh cut fruit a favorite with their strawberry fluff dip - the best. Nice place to order meat/cheese, vegetable and fruit trays. Meat department is good too. Many options. Also bakery.

Great selection and quality. Good meat deals. Bring a full wallet though.

Helpful staff and friendly service. Variety of groceries.

Great selection of products at great prices. Awesome meat selection.

Love there shake machine next to there deli they have great flavors. They also have great weekly specials in the deli. Thursday the deli department sells a gigantic bucket of delicious spaghetti for only $9. It has become a weekly tradition at our house we call it "Spaghetti Madness". Septate note wish they kept better control over the flies in the donut case. It's gross every time we crave a donut there's at least 5-10 buzzing in there.

This grocery store is very clean and offer many items. The prices are a little high. It reminds me of Krogers here in Sherman, Texas. I helped a friend move to Mendota, IL, and Sullivan's seems to be the major grocery store in Mendota. Definitely will be shopping there again. The employees were very friendly.

Great service. Friendly staff. Quality meats, awesome variety of meats, best in the area near Mendota Illinois.

Friendly people. Fast service and you can get your fishing license there in case you didn't know

Great small town grocery store. I recently participated in collecting stamps to get a discount on silverware. The cashier ended up giving me stamps that others left behind so I got an even better discount than anticipated. The only small complaint is the higher prices, but it's expected when; A. They don't have any real competition in town (Dollar General, CVS, and Family Dollar doesn't count) B. The closest Walmart is a 20 minute drive away so you're paying for gas to get there

Sullivan's has the best people working for them and it is a very clean & organized store. I've learned most all of their names. The prices are good and some are a little high. A friendly store you won't find. 5+ stars!

The owners of this store have really screwed the town of mendota with their ridiculous prices, we had a save alot here ( sullivan owned ) but they tore it down and forced the people who cannot afford their prices to drive to peru For example 1 can of cambells chicken noddle soup. 1.19 Same size can of chicken and stars 2.35 REALLY!!.......It was so much nicer when eagle was here That 1 star rating is pushing it

Great neighborhood grocery store. Good prices and quality deli. Stop here to get calling good and they never disappoint.

Always a pleasure to shop there. Fully stocked and good prices. The Deli people are the best... Always friendly and eager to help. Their "home-made" concoctions are delicious. Never disappointed. ??

I went here a couple months ago, shocked by the high prices! Was making small talk with a cashier when a manager came up and yelled at the cashier. Simply put, this store is overpriced and management is not friendly. Bad environment.

It's an ok grocery store. Their freezer section could use better signage, you kind of have to go from freezer to freezer to find what you're looking for. Prices aren't great, you can probably save money making a trip to Peru where your store options are better. If you need only a few things or live in mendota and don't have a reliable vehicle its your best if not only option.

Always helpful staff can find almost everything in this smaller grocery store that you can find in larger ones. Convenient location and easy to get to.

Thank you for your A1+ service today! My 90 year old parents were able to get the food/supplies they needed because of your pre-order & pick-up option. I live out of town, so it was very helpful that I could have someone pick up the order & deliver it. Your employees were very helpful & kind during what is certainly a stressful time. I'm sure I'll be ordering on my parents' behalf, again! Mendota Customer

Both times I've visited this "establishment" the cashier's were very rude and didnt even acknowledge me saying hello or have a nice day. One of them even went as far to drop my groceries on the counter after she bagged them which resulted in 3 of my eggs breaking which i didnt realize until I got home. When I called to inform the manager on duty they said there was nothing they would do cause I had already left and hung up. Very unprofessional. Would rate zero if I could....

Terrible!! The deli clerk was obviously new & the other employee Bev was ignoring her questions and rude to me the customer. I walk to the frozen food dept and the male employee was blocking the aisle with stock( which is fine) but he was standing there talking to bakery clerk about cable bills blocking aisles from customers. We get to the registers and cashier NEVER acknowledged us. She kept talking to bagger girl while scanning our items about seeing a chiropractor. She hands us the receipt not saying than

Very nice store! Very clean and neat. They have a great selection. They have a deli, bakery, and fresh vegetables and fruit. The cashier was so very sweet!

Selection is terrible. Pepperidge Farm bread is only considered a "fancy" item at Sullivan's. Be prepared to pay a 200% markup on anything you buy here, as they are the only grocery store in town. All of this is almost made up for by the incredibly friendly employees. Years later, they've gone even further downhill. The reply is ridiculous, Sullivan's (after the convenient demolition of the competition) has a monopoly on groceries between Princeton and Peru.

A great grocery store, very good deli, and a in house bakery, with lots of good stuff i will be going there way more often

Prices are ridiculous for it being the only store and nobody knows how to properly bag items.

First off the prices were inflated, for example the had a "special" on potatoes. If you bought 1 bag at roughly 3 dollars, they would throw in another bag for "free". At first this sounds like a pretty good investment until you realized both Walmart and Aldi were selling a 10lb bag of potatoes for $2.60. This seems to be the business model, basically pretending to reduce prices so that people think they are getting a sale, while at the same time drastically overcharging for the product. Also the management

Love the selection of items at Sullivan's. The produce is always fresh and plentiful. Staff are always very helpful and friendly.

Great local grocery store. It has everything you need. It has a nice cheese and wine selection. The ham salad in the deli is delicious too.

Managers are very rude to their employees and dont care about the customers. I wouldn't recommend my enemy to go there to get groceries. Just very disrespectful. They wont refund your money. They have soggy ice cream and dont care to change it

Another great Sullivan's store. Well-stocked, excellent variety of brands. Coolers are all up to date, good displays. Very friendly staff as well.

Love our local grocery store. Rotisserie chicken always good. Bakery items are good as well. Plenty of grocery selections.

I work at Sullivans and truly enjoy my job cashiering.

I love Sullivan?s, but they have been out of Enfamil Gentlease for over 2 months now and aren?t really making any efforts to get any in. They are the only store in this area that accepts WIC.

Very strange produce set up as of 3/11/23 and they won't put distilled water, parsley, or a few other things in their link system to let snap users purchase those items.

Very nice grocery store in Mendota Illinois! Great meats and cheese varieties

Sullivan is great but right now with the pandemic and everything and always prices are pretty high you know they're on par with Walmart unfortunately you know Walmart with the price gouge and everything but you know hopefully you know after the pandemic you know stuff will come down a little bit and it'll be all right

Nice comfortable grocery store! Good selection of items. Friendly and helpful staff! See you again soon ??

The best local grocer in my opinion. Very friendly staff and convenient.

Big supermarket selection but with a hometown grocery store feel. Decent prices and always enough friendly staff available.

Stopped and bought some wave Petunias to fill in some bare spots in the garden. Selection was good and the outdoor sales representative was very helpful.

They're really good grocery store with a friendly staff that will help you out with all your questions and needs. You can't beat good service.

We don?t have one in Rockford. The one in Mendota is awesome. I stop there when going through the area. Beautiful produce

Wish they had smaller packs of meat for only one person. Some meats I only eat a few times a year and even if I get their smallest package I freeze the rest and then end up throwing it out from being freezer burnt. I even double wrap it.

I recently moved to a different state and this was the first time visiting that store it was very clean there was not a lot of people they were wearing masks that were required as well as partitions between the worker and the customer excellent customer service I'd recommend this place to anyone

I shop there whenever I'm in the area. I'm always able to find what I'm looking for there.

I love this store and my town but I just paid $5.29 for a box of raisin bran. They are raking us during a pandemic. Shameful.

Friendly staff and very good sale prices. .. shop local, just watch the ads to save $ and a trip out of town.

Some of veggies ans fruits are not fresh. It is an ok place to get a grocery. If I have time I'd go to Hyvee in Lasalle Peru as they have better quality of fresh veggies and fruits and offer more selection.

Great quality meat and produce! Very helpful staff. Love their bakery

It is good to have a home town grocery store that carries a varity of fresh produce, dairy, meats and dry goods / paper products. Clean, friendly, and we'll stocked.

Me and my family got food poisoning from breakfast sausage we bought that was supposed to good.

I was surprised when I got inside This place is amazing The people are friendly and helpful I will be going here to shop every time I'm nearby

Good selection of anything you would need and meals to go. Clean and neat. Good liquor section.

Clean place too shop but really pricey on most food items. Great liquor selection.

Decent. Pricey. Update: was accosted by a very rude employee last time I went into this store. Dollar general is a better option.

Clean, well stocked store. Many items overpriced. Prices could be more competitive bring the only grocery store in town.

Fully stocked grocery store with very reasonable prices. You should be able to find what you are looking for here. Even has a small liquor section.

Great products!! I particularly love their fresh meats...roasts, hamburger, etc. And great staff!!

Nice small town grocery store. Limited selection and quite expense. But when you have to get the shopping done, it's a helpful option.

The fried chicken legs were old .picked th up around 6 and they said it would b 15 mim. Before they would have more done. I should of waited !!!

I do love thier truck load Meat sales, you can find some great prices on some of the bulk packaged meat, but some of the other prices that they charge for thier item's are ridiculously over priced...
