Strange Donuts

Strange Donuts

Reviews Summary

Strange Donuts receives mixed reviews, with strong opinions on both sides. Many praise the unique, creative flavors like maple bacon and gooey butter cake, along with friendly service and vegan options. However, critics complain about inconsistent quality—some find donuts dry, stale, or overly sweet, especially for the price. Several mention disappointment compared to expectations or competitors like Krispy Kreme. Recurring issues include limited selection due to sellouts, poor allergy awareness, and declining vegan availability. While some customers adore the novelty and local charm, others feel it's overrated, with hit-or-miss execution. Service is generally highlighted as a positive, even by dissatisfied patrons.

Customer Reviews

This review is more about Strange Donuts as a whole than this location specifically. First of all, it?s an inferior knockoff of Portland?s Voodoo Doughnuts. The donuts themselves are not all that ?strange,? despite the name. They?re dense, cakey donuts, which I am not a fan of. Not a big selection, either. This time, I tried the gooey butter donut and a coffee, which was about $5 total. The coffee was the highlight, actually.

This hole in the wall is extremely overpriced for what you get. We got the cinnamon roll, the vanilla iced oreo long john, the butter cake, chocolate churro, the chocolate cream filled and the cinnamon donut. The long john was the best but that's a very low bar. The butter cake reminded us of an entimans donut, the cinnamon was a hostess knock off, the churro was like pan dulce but softer, the chocolate filled was a basic day old doughnut filled with a simple chocolate cream, and the cinnamon roll was just

We chose this place as it was rated top in st.louis... they did not disappoint. The guy helping us was THE BEST. He took his time with me, explained all the doughnuts and was seriously the nicest person I've come across in my travels in awhile. The doughnuts were unbelievably delicious... I'm sad I didn't get more to take home!

I visited the location in Kirkwood, MO. I have been meaning to stop there for years and today was the day. I was in Kirkwood on Sunday. It was Father's Day and Strange Donuts was closed because they sold out of donuts by 10:30 am. No matter what the hours on the door state, if they run out, they close. I returned on Monday around 9 am. Success! They still had donuts. I chose the maple bacon donut. It was loaded with what looked like a brown sugar, maple icing and topped with real bacon chunks. It was great

I used to really like this place, great collab donuts and stuff. Been eating these donuts for like 8 years. But the last two years I?ve been in town and had a $3 donut, they were undercooked in the center.

First time here. We like donuts and take the opportunity to try different options out there in town and when we travel. Without using google maps for the exact location, I knew this place was on Argonne St. We passed it twice because signage is only on the window and cars block the storefront and it is a tiny place. The interior has no place to eat inside and could use a bit of a make over as it is not attractive, which on first impression reflects the quality of ownership and products. We bought 8 differen

It didn?t really live up to the hype. The donuts were ok, not bad. The place was really small. Probably only about 5 people could fit in the lobby.

Tasty, unique donuts, perfect small selection, fast service, pricey, but tasty!

Most disappointing donut experience of my life. And it was $20 for 6 donuts.

Very friendly staff. Truly a hole in the wall and yet a fantastic shop! Delicious and fresh donuts. Arrive early if you want a varied selection.

Read mixed reviews. Decided to try for myself. Got dozen mixed. Texture and taste were ok but not exceptional. Beware of trying to reheat if you enjoy warm doughnuts. The icing and toppings may run off. My experience would not compel me to return.

Our visit to this establishment was a letdown. When we got there, they only had four donuts, and they didn't look too good. The blue one the kids picked out was super dry, and they couldn't even finish it. Plus, it cost almost 5 bucks, which felt like a rip-off. And to top it off, the service was pretty much non-existent. Hopefully, they step up their game soon!..probably won?t be going back.

Mmmm! Quality was on point and imo tastes waaay better than dunkin or kk.

8am Wednesday, they?re closed. Drove out here in rush hour traffic just to find out they?re closed. No update on Facebook or Instagram. This has happened more than once

This place is well named, they are pretty strange. No donuts are actually made at this tiny location. It is only a retail sales spot ? but the donuts are fresh made daily and delicious. They have gluten free donuts that typically sell out so I recommend that you check in early and for sure call ahead to make sure they still have what you're looking for. They are always friendly and I enjoy getting donuts from them. Keep it weird, Strange Donuts! ??????????

Super friendly, they stay open until midnight, & they put butterfingers on a donut - what more could you want? I will be back!

We went a few weeks ago and we were really disappointed by the quality. When Strange first opened, I remember waiting in lines around the block for their crazy donuts. Everything was super fresh and looked just like their photos online. However, this time when we went in a lot of the donuts looked like they'd been sitting out for a while. They were misshapen and poorly decorated. The taste was subpar at best. It really seems like they couldn't keep up with their own popularity - and I don't really think t

Interesting variety and flavors. Pleasurable staff. Small, but there is a pleasant park right next door.

Don't blink or you'll miss it. Look for the BLUE . Cherry Kool-aid Donut was a great variation of a jelly donut. King Roll was a cinnamon roll with icing that didn't work well with the glaze ? Next time, I will try the Marshmallow Donut . Looked interesting !

I find their donuts to be fresh and flavorful, and the service to be fast and very friendly. They offer standard donut types along with deluxe types with inventive names and flavors. I find both types to be delicious. Recent donuts purchased are: the Fat Steve, Gooey Butter Cake, Snowball, Jean Claude Van Graham. All received rave reviews from all who tasted them at work.

Strange donuts, the name says it all. But maybe we should add delicious to their name. No matter what kind of donut it is, they all taste amazing if your feeling a bit adventurous. My wife and her two friends make it an annual tradition to go to a strange location during the holidays. We will keep this tradition going for many years to come.

One of my favourite quotes from an employee at Strange Donuts is "oh, well you can always get maple bacon donuts here, so I'd go with the other one." Not only was the other one (blackberry jelly) really delicious, but the fact that there is a place that ALWAYS has maple bacon donuts ready to eat is just too good. Happy to be in this world at the same time as Strange Donuts.

This place made me miss Utah even more! Such a great variety of really bland doughnuts. Next time I?m here I?ll just hit up Circle K. At least that doughnut was sweet and soft?. and their baked goods are at least a day or two old I bet ?? Sorry, but I?m trying to spare others of the disappointment. Just go somewhere else and I think I will too.

Went there while visiting a friend in Kirkwood. I like the idea of an ever-changing menu of donuts. When we were there they said that they had a back-to-school themed set. Which was a good idea. I was sort of disappointed in the donuts themselves though. I got a ding dong donut, which was a dense cake donut, filled with vanilla cream. It was good, but very rich. It's not something that I would eat more than one of. It's definitely a one-and-done type situation. My friend had gotten an Oreo one, which was

Amazing duonuts for iut of town trip! The guy helping us was wonderful and kind. The donuts were to die for! I got the chocolate fritter, red velvet, vegan raspberry filled and the butter cake ?? The experience really was topped off buy the guy working although I didn't get his name. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND

I'm a fatty at heart - I absolutely love the food that will inevitably kill me. Tried strange donuts today, expecting to fall in love like the rest of you guys. Service was great. Shirts were cool. Donuts looked amazing. The blue velvet one was the third one I tried. It was absolutely disgusting. I couldn't finish it. The icing tasted like generic grocery store white frosting. The donut tasted like baking soda. My husband and I couldn't finish it - it was just bad bad baaaaad... :( The gooey butter cake

My son wants to get donuts here everyday. They come up with some pretty good stuff. The donut dealers are friendly too. There is not seating inside, but plenty of benches and picnic tables in the nearby grassy areas to sit and enjoy.

I went to Strange Donuts last Thanksgiving and it was such a welcoming atmosphere. Just amazing over all. We walked by and smelled cinnamon and got intrigued. We saw it was closed but the door was open and there was an employee. He said," Hey sorry we're closed but if you want to come back in 15 minutes you can taste test a new donut." So we came back and the donuts where incredible. I got a long sleeved shirt that says Happy Dones from their collaboration with Happy Joe's. I definitely want to go back on m

Used to love coming here since it was one of the only places I could get vegan donuts pretty much any time. Suddenly went from having vegan donuts almost every day to never having them. It's out of the way but we started going to other locations. Kind of disappointing.

Extremely disappointing. Wildly overpriced for such a poor experience.

No flavor and overpriced. I've been to both St. Louis locations a few times thinking "maybe they will be better this time. They look good." I should have learned my lesson the last time. You can't judge a book by its cover. Their donuts are always dry and stale, and though their toppings and fillings - on the rare occassion - have an acceptable flavor, their donuts always fall flat. Strange Donuts is overrated. They are brand makers, not bakers.

This place has great and unique options. Their menu changes every month, but one that doesn't is the Gooey Butter Done. Can't go wrong with that one. One thing that separates Strange from the rest is their Strangers. They are special collaborations with other vendors to produce some unique creations. Only available on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, the Strangers are different each weekend.

This place is great. I always love going in here because the people are always very nice. Great donuts. Some are a tad dry so worth getting some coffee or milk to go with it. The space is small. Still definitely worth a try.

Great service, but donuts need work. They do look good but the names don't fit the taste. Gooybutter and French toast should not taste similar. 6 donuts and a little milk for $15 definitely not worth going back to.

Most I wouldn't hold strange but uncommon, they usually have gluten free a few that are regulars and then a handful of whatever they feel like making that day, the worst I've ever had was "meh it's okay" my favorites are the s'mores I think they called campfire and the gooey butter. They're not the cheapest Donuts but dollar value ratio is really good.

Unique donuts that are large. They had Good flavors, but not extraordinary. The shop in Kirkwood was dirty and appeared to be a long ago abandoned car garage. The service was very good.

Highly disappointed in the quality for the price. I?ve had donuts from Wal-Mart that taste better. My kids didn?t even like most of them. Staff is friendly and there are a lot of unique flavors, but I wasn?t impressed. Honestly? I prefer Krispy Kreme.

This store used to be a favorite of our family, until they made it clear that they don?t care about food allergies. I?m not risking my child?s life here any longer when there are many other great donut shops that actually care about keeping their customers safe.

A coworker brought in donuts from here to share and they looked delicious but tasted?strange, to put it nicely. I don?t know if there was something wrong with that batch of bacon but we all agreed it was not good.

Best donuts in STL hands down. Tried almost every thing they create and haven't been disappointed yet. They have the classics of course, but where they shine is their "strange" donuts such as Bart's Revenge which is a Butterfinger centric donut or the Fat Elvis which is made with Peanut Butter, Banana Pudding and Vanilla custard. Strange can be a bit pricy but for me it's worth it.

The Kirkwood location is a tiny store front (bakery hidden in the back) with room for a few customers, so on a busy night the line occasionally trails thru the door and onto the sidewalk! But always DELICIOUS (and often surprising) donuts, and super-helpful counter staffing. There's a display of the regulars and specials of the day, so you can simply point-and-order your choice.

Maybe I have broadened my donut horizons since I first fell in love with Strange. Truth is, I used to be obessed. I mean, a unique local business that SEEMED to be run by decent fun people? I'm all in (even back when their donuts were better, they still weren't the best by any means but I was strangely accepting of that). I used to go to both STL locations often and always wanted one of their basic donuts (Fat Steve)... But to my repeated disappointment, they were always sold out, no matter the time of day.

If you haven't been to strange Donuts then you are missing out. You can get some seriously creative Suites for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This makes it a great place for work events, that is to say not to eat here, but to order here and take it to work.

PRO: Person behind counter is friendly and very knowledgeable of the product. Answered every question I had quickly and authoritatively. CON: Not so strange. No red velvet; nothing with jalapeno (although the pb & sriracha is delicious); donuts were semi-tough, as if they had been baked the night before. Very pricey; $20 for a dozen (varies upon mix of low-end to high-end choices.) Someday I'll give the Maplewood location a chance, but I doubt I'll be back to the Kirkwood location (great employee not

Fun people. Had a great gooey butter donut. There were Strange items left at 1pm. Got a turtle for my boss. They had maple/bacon donut. Couldn't bring myself for that one. NEAT PLACE

The best and most unusual donuts in St. Louis! Every month has a new selection of unique and delicious flavors, plus a lot of great collaboration with local businesses.

Donuts were stale for a Sunday morning at 8 30 am. The wife got an Oreo donut with hardly any filling in it and the funfetti had about 3 pounds of icing on it. Disappointed to say the least. I prefer the donuts at Quiktrip.

Way, way, WAY too sweet. What d'oh! nuts I'd tried. I appreciate these are confectionery pastries, yet the flavors you use do stand on their own with a little less sugars. Allow some savory, texture, and creaminess to come though, please.

Used to be better when they first opened. Now their donuts taste stale like they've made them weeks in advance. I would say Tim Horton's or Krispy Kreme is better now just on freshness alone.

They have interesting creations that sound good. To bad the donuts are stale and somehow soggy at the same time with a awful taste. I could over look the horribly strange donut if it didn't cost 2 bucks.

I mean gooey butter donuts and cinnamon toast crunch donuts, like why aren't you already in line waiting?

My 2nd favorite donut place in the country. I love going here and trying the different creations. If I wanted normal donuts there's plenty of others. You come here for thr uniqueness

Always fire. Last time I dropped in I picked up this sweet thang (i forgot its name) and it was DELICIOUS. Staff is always friendly and fun to talk to. Can't wait til there are more vegan options!

The donuts are amazing! They have great flavor and aren't dry. They are also a good price for the amount that your getting.

The average person may love this place. Im not a fan of sweets to the extent that the doughnut are covered in. Traditional glaze would do me fine.

strange donuts more like retarded donuts. this is a pastry shop not donut shop. gooey butter cake donut.. just go to the grocery store and get a whole gooey butter cake for the price of these donuts. trying too hard to be unique its stupid

I have to admit that I did not know Strange Donuts was in Kirkwood - amazing! They are so great and the best for a late night snack. I love this place.

Had a supervisor bring Strange Donuts to a meeting and the combination dones were amazing. My wife has never tried them but she will on mother's day.

Love love love these donuts. Usually not a sweets person, but the maple bacon donut was a delicious mix of sweet and salty. Yummm ??

They have great donuts with interesting flavors that change daily. They are also pet friendly with a water bowl outside the door, and they invited my dog inside the store.

Go early to get the best selection. Lots of unique flavors. While it's a small store front they have the best donuts in Kirkwood.

First visit my kids and wife loved it. My donut was very dry. I ordered the gooey butter cake donut. It was nothing like the cake.

Donuts are good and there are different flavors to try every day. Coffee too strong for my liking, and I usually like string coffee.

I like the unique variety of flavors that change often. My favorite are the ones filled with some kind of fruit/jelly. I also like the vegan donuts which are suprisingly delicious.

Love that I can call and ask what the gluten free donut is on Friday and Saturday. And that they put them on the top rack so less change of crumbs!

Tried this place based on reviews. Maybe i came on an off day, but the donuts i had tasted old and stale. Ive had better at krispy kream for a third of the price. Very disappointed.

My most recent visit was my favorite yet. I got the vanilla donut with a coffee frosting. Omg, I want more!!! Love this place!!

Great and super friendly service. Justin was so sweet to my little guy. We love the gluten-less "gonuts" as my son lovingly calls them!!

Currently they?re saying that people with peanut allergies can grab their ticket off the planet by eating one of their donuts. Disgusting marketing for clickbait. Genuinely shocked.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! First time here today...tried the maple bacon donut..and instantly fell in love...it was like 3 different breakfast items all in one bite...I will definately be back....got more flavors to try!!!! Thanks !!!

Truly fabulous! The gentleman always greets you with a smile and is in a good mood. Is calm and just takes great care of you!

We ordered donuts for our sons birthday party. The donuts were delicious!! Customer service here is fantastic!!

So we saw this establishment online when looking for a donut shop and thought we'd check it out. Such a disappointment, hardly no donuts to choose from and out of waters...it wasn't even 11 a.m. Wish we had just gone to Dunkins.

Awesome. Always. If you like corporate places you may find yourself a little of balance, which is all the more reason to go. You should avoid patronizing big chains anyway.

A tiny hole in the wall! Went there because of their menu but they did not have the items listed online. Otherwise, good donuts!

The friendliest people ever. Always get a stranger but the creations are so good. It's exactly like it sounds, there are strange donuts, but good vibes.

These doughnuts never disappoint, the fact you can get a dozen maple bacon doughnuts to take home and drink bourbon with just makes it that much better.

Great selection of classic, unusual, and out-of-this-world donuts. I love all the dones I've had on my many visits.

Really good doughnuts. The menu is unique. I with they had some of the classic doughnuts aswell as their unique ones but overall really good.

Some of the best donuts ever! Gooey butter cake and maple bacon

Unique donut flavors. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Great prices, highly recommend.

I love that they offer vegan donuts

Donuts are excellent. The taste and texture of the gooey butter cake was just amazing.

I just had the best blueberry iced gluten free donuts. ?????? The staff was super friendly and they laughed at my silly jokes.

Best donuts and best people. Only donut place in the world that makes me feel like an idiot for moving

Super nice staff AND they have vegan options and almond milk! Sooooo yummy. I will be coming back often.

We had a nice experience here the gentleman that put our donut order together was really friendly and nice to the kiddos.

Great donuts with friendly customer service.
