Star Dust Donut Shop

Star Dust Donut Shop

Reviews Summary

This donut stand is polarizing but beloved by many for its fresh, delicious donuts—especially the cinnamon rolls, old-fashioned, and peanut butter jelly varieties. Fans rave about their melt-in-your-mouth texture and nostalgic flavors, though some find them overly salty or greasy. The inconsistent hours and cash-only policy frustrate customers, and service ranges from curt to outright rude. While some swear they're the best in San Diego, others dismiss them as overpriced or declining in quality. Catching them open is a challenge, but those who succeed often consider it worth the effort.

Customer Reviews

I've gone to this donut shop more times than is deserved. The guy running it is rude af, I once asked if he had any coffee available and he goes "what the hell kinda coffee shop doesn't have coffee!!" The donuts suck and are packed with salt, owner is super rude every time you talk with him

This place is on a downhill roller coaster. They have gone down. They used to be the best donuts, and now they taste nasty. Got 5 cinnamon rolls today, (April 26, 2023) and 1 old fashion, it had a bad oil taste, and very little cinnamon, not like they use to be back in the day, they are smaller than what they use to make. I remember how fantastic they use to be, but I won't waste my time or money here again. Time for them to close down and retire or hire someone else to do the work that know how to make do

This is an amazing Donut stand on the way in and out of Coronado on hwy 75 in Imperial Beach. Cinnamon rolls are to die for and old fashioned chocolate is a time machine back to when I was a kid.

Best donuts in San Diego. They are so fresh, soft, and fluffy. The man in the back knows what he is doing.

First time I've been here, bought 1/2 dozen. There's only one person working there in the morning (didn't see anyone else) he was friendly, but quaint. The donuts were pretty tasty, and for those saying the cinnamon rolls aren't that good, There's a difference between cinnamon rolls and cinnamon Buns (buns are sold here, not rolls) so, they're pretty good. Maybe getting someone to help out in front to make for a more streamline process would help, but again, it's my first impression Overall, definitely

Walked up to the window and said hi how are you? He said fine thank you. I asked for 2 of each. He had pecan donuts and cinnamon rolls left. As he was bagging my "fesh nuts"...I asked him if he was having a good day, he said "I said I'm fine thank you". This man is definitely an introvert, and he intrigued me. The donuts are small and tasty. I do taste the salty lard in them and it's delicious. I like the salty, sweet flavor. Do not come here expecting service with a smile, lol.

Have been to this business on 3 occasions. First, a woman working was sitting in view on her phone for about 4 minutes ignoring customers. Second, the old man working the stand was actively putting away the donuts. I asked if they were open...because he was putting away the donuts. His response was "can't you read the sign". Third, the same man was working and when my friend and I tried to pay with a $20 bill he said he wouldn't accept big bills... so maybe save some $1's I guess. I've never had a store tur

Great doughnut , got cinnamon buns and cinnamon bun rolls for guys painting in my house. Making coffee... Bourbon is motivational , for the end of the day.

You go for the donuts and nothing else :) . They are amazing. I read many reviews on the terrible customer service. My unbiased opinion is the owner is friendly enough, but won't win any awards for outstanding customer services. Get there early otherwise, you'll miss out.

This place has a tendency to sell out so fast that myself, as a local, haven't been able to catch them open once! Kudos to an amazing business with an amazing product and wonderful ownership. A true legend in Imperial Beach, you absolutely must have donuts here if you come through in the early morning. I caught Cliff as the very first customer this morning at 6:00am My first experience and I left feeling like I met with a celebrity!! ?? Love the cinnamon rolls ????can't wait to have to wake up this early ag

The BEST donuts, ever. I got chocolate iced and theres something in them that seems like a burst of flavor as it crunches in my mouth. Keeps me coming back for more!! Its like the very first Krispy Kreme donut you ever had, if you can remember...

Best donuts in San Diego, if not the world! My parents and grandparents have been coming here since forever. The two brothers that run the show take care of each batch made and take pride in their work. Some days they run out early because everybody wants some. So get there when they open or shortly after. I will take your donuts from you if you ain't around. Peanut butter and chocolate donut is a great one. Same with the German chocolate. Maple bar is great. Honestly, it's all dank. Just get there early. O

You have never tasted treats like this. It's not your regular donut shop. Everything from dough to filling to icing is original recipes and made by in house. How else you could explained the unique taste like this. I was lucky to find this place open and was amazed by the quality and flavors. I think they have original family recipes you can not find anywhere. A must visit place.

They have gone down. They used to be the best donuts when the father worked it and now they taste nasty. Got 6 cinnamon rolls today and they tasted stale, salty, and full of lard. Waste of money! They used to be the best but not anymore! The best ones in IB are CH donuts on 13th near the KFC.

This place is the real deal. I've been trying to get donuts here for awhile, but it hasn't been open when I've been in the area. So I was pleased last week when I drove by and spotted a short line outside. The German chocolate donut was really fantastic. Perfectly baked, crisp on the outside, and perfectly sweet. Just remember, it's cash only!

I've been at IB for 3 years and it's the first time that I've seen this place open so I had to try. I got the cinnamon roll and I liked it. I'll go back and try their donuts next time I see them open.

Amongst the best doughnuts I have ever had the pleasure of eating! I have been getting (eating) doughnuts from Star Dust since I was old enough to eat solid foods and I will be a return customer until they decide to retire. I always recommend this place to friends and family from out of town when they come down for a visit. The old fashioned and the cinnamon rolls are always my go to, but everything they make is absolute delicious perfection.

Bought a cinnamon rolls and maple pecan doughnuts, both were too salty. The cinnamon rolls had very little cinnamon flavor.

I stopped there years ago having no idea what to expect. Middle of the day. 2 guys were still making donuts. I asked them what was best. They told me whatever they just made. I had one. My brother in law had one. It was so good, we made a U-turn and went back to get another one. I have never forgotten this place and recommend it to everyone going anywhere near it.

So. I had lived in IB for a long time and never really paid much attention to this little donut shop. Then, I noticed it. And then, I noticed it was never open when I drove by. Then, I stopped and read the signage. There was this snarky sign posted that had the hours listed as something like "whenever I feel like it" and I was intrigued. So days went by... weeks went by... a month went by... started to lose hope. Then I gave up, went home and never ate a donut again and cried. KIDDING! This story has a ha

I love donuts but the guy who owns it is very rude I told him oh ur open he goes yeah can't u ready god damn sign n my kids were right next to me I was almost not gonna buy any donuts but my kids n at that he over charge me $5 for 3 doubts. plus he opens late n closes early make no since plus he don't have a variety of doughnuts to choose from and that he's not always open like he says he is I rather go to Yum Yum Donuts any day..

No bells or whistles, but DANNNNG the donuts are delicious! Glazed, Cinnamon Rolls, Old Fashion, Maple Bar, Apple Fritter w Caramel and I LOVE the Pecan Roll with Caramel. Posted hours are 8:30am to 1:30pm Closed Sun and Mon, but have heard it is not consistent.

Definitely recommend the simplicity of the donuts here. Cinnamon rolls, old fashions and glazed donuts are just delicious! Hours vary but if you catch him open, stop by. Cash only.

Stardust is an Imperial Beach staple! We have been going here since I was a little girl, it?s always a special treat to this day when we get to have some stardust! The cinnamon rolls are my favorite!

Amazing! The chocolate glazed donuts are my favorite! Some reviews say this man is rude, but I disagree. He?s such a sweet old man who likes to make sweet things. Very fair priced too!

I went there but as usual they were closed, but when they are open oh, their donuts of course are awesome, their cinnamon rolls super good. So I will give them five stars for that I just wish they were open on a regular.

The sign reads as "F esh nuts" and is a joke. Hours are inconsistent. Cash only. Unappetizing and underwhelming. Drive up the street to 711 - even those are far better

My wife and children love donuts from here! I had to wake up early and get in line to just get any before he sales out for the day. Make sure to bring cash in hand since he doesn't take cards.

When they are open, which isn't too consistent, the donuts are awesome! If I drive by and see them open I stop and get some. They make the best tasting donuts in San Diego!

horrible service and unpredictable in opening hours, BUT their donuts are fantastic and they melt in your mouth. you must try the cinnamon rolls

Best donuts anywhere. If you haven't been here yet, you must check this out!!

Best donuts in I.B. I'd even say they're the best in south bay. Try the peanut butter and jelly donut its soo good. Just make sure to get there early.

Tried to buy a donut here this morning, went to pay with $20 and was told that I couldn't only purchase a single donut with that amount, I said I guess I will be purchasing nothing then and left. Sad when businesses make it difficult for you to give them money, especially since it looked like a local family business.

Cinnamon rolls are among the best in the state. Only negative is the hours of operation, they open at approx. 10:00 am and close when sold out. Whenever that is!

Way over priced! I have had better donuts at multiple places. Will not be a repeat customer. Not to mention the owner is not that pleasant of a person. Sorry. Wish it was better.

Delicious, fresh, sweet , I love it!??

this establishment is rarely ever open, but i like the aesthetic, the one time i was able to get donuts, i was genuinely suprised by how good they were.

I waited and waited to find this place open. The one day I saw it opened I pulled in and ordered four donuts. The donut nazi then told me he wouldn't take a $20. Bring small bills. I've still yet to have a donut from this shack.

Best doughnuts ever !!!! I've been coming to IB since I was little and this has been my favorite thing too look forward 2 !!! Cinnamon rolls are amazing . Very local place

The man behind the counter did not have a mask on and there is currently a mask mandate. He picked at his beard and I watched him flick a hair on the floor, then when he was bagging the donuts, the same thumb that wiped his beard also touched every donut.

Great donuts here. He does work his own hrs though so not always open during his "normal" business hrs but great donuts!

Yes, they have irratic hours, no tables, no bathroom and yes the friendly brother is the one who died but there is a reason people have stood in line for fifty years for a chance to buy even one doughnut.

It's beyond awesome to have the ability to see my great-grandfather's donuts shop still open and be able to visit it on Google earth. Hope to stop in soon :)

Great place always the best donuts. Ever since I was little I was going there 28 years later still going.

Gentlemen running the stand was very polite and help us a lot. If you have the extra cash buy donuts from this place!

God awful service for subpar doughnuts. Don't patron this establishment. Tons of better places immediately nearby.

place is never open. but when it is they are some of the best donuts around. i also miss the apple fritters.

Best donuts in the world! Melt in your mouth glazed donut and cinnamon rolls. Mm m m m mmmmmm!

Best donuts in town!! Fresh hot Fluffy soft donuts. Highly recommend this place????????

Homemade donuts...very tasty..love German chocolate bar...bring cash..no big bills

Great Cinnamon Rolls and Donuts when they are open... always sells out and for good reason.

A staple of IB. His maple donuts are my fav. But his cinnamon rolls are what people come for

The old bastard working the window was rude, and over charged me even when I told him his math was incorrect. Never again regardless of how good their donuts are.

A must for all tourists. The best donut I've ever had in my life.

The best donuts anywhere. As close to homemade as you can get without making them yourself.

This guy opens when he wants to and I never seem to have the right timing. Too bad because the cinnamon glazed donut is FIRE!

Was it cool donut shop not a big crowd decent selection excellent Donuts

If you're going to die addicted and hooked up to a machine while in a diabetic coma, you might as well do it in style. Get your sugar from a prime source like this.

These donuts are unbelievable! Probably one of the best donuts I?ve tried, for sure!

If Seinfeld had episodes of a donut nazi this place would be it. Otherwise better than any other donut place i've tried so far.

Get there early or they'll be closed. Donuts are very good

Guy that was working was rude. Donuts were stale. Disappointed.

Did not like their donuts, very high price.

Best donuts hands down if you are lucky to find it open

It seems to always be closed but when its open the cinnamon bun donuts are to die for!

The best of the best.... if he is open. 51 years it has been established .

German chocolate bar had to share with someone but it was excellent

Great place to get a Cinnamon Roll. Cash only

Donuts are good. Business hours are unpredictable.

Original and delicious... If you can get em

When it's open, best donuts in town.

Still awesome donuts - go early!
