Schmidt Bakery

Schmidt Bakery

Reviews Summary

Schmidt Bakery receives mixed reviews, with strong praise for its signature Cherry Thing-A-Lings (especially during Presidents Day weekend) and quality donuts/pastries. Many customers highlight friendly staff and positive experiences, forming loyal traditions. However, some criticize inconsistent service, with reports of rude employees and poor management. Complaints mention overpriced items, cleanliness issues, and occasional product quality problems (like hard pastries). The bakery's popularity causes long lines during peak times, which most find worthwhile but some find overwhelming. While many love the nostalgic atmosphere, a few negative interactions with staff significantly impact some customers' experiences.

Fun Saturday outing to Schmidt?s bakery for their famous cherry thing a lings. Definitely worth the hype. Warm fritter studded with cherries and coated in sweet but not too sweet cherry glaze. Highlight of the adventure was getting meet Clem, founder of bakery. Love that we were able to support this family business.

My husband and I made the pilgrimage on the final day of the Cherry Thing-A-Ling haul. We were literally there at the final hour. The lines of loyal customers were well-managed, and the purchase seamless. I had never had these delicacies before, but I can assure you they did not disappoint! From the photos, one might think they are sickeningly sweet, but this was not the case at all. Simply put, I can certainly see what all the fuss is about. After tucking away a couple dozen in the freezer, I am conv

Scored a dozen this year boxed by Ken Baker from Fox 19. We always look forward to enjoying their Cherry Thing a Lings once a year.

Went for our first time on February 13, 2025. The wait was 1 hour and an enjoyable experience. Met new people and all people inside and outside the bakery were pleasant and that part of experience was neat. The thing a lings themselves were disappointing. Bought 5 dozen to give to people we know in Cincinati who never had before. They were good but all agreed too small, too expensive and did not live up to the hype. They weren't even coated like shown on TV. I'm sure the other items sold are great, and the

Thought I would have written a review here one ofthe past several years we've been here. Now that I have a few hot thing-a-lings in my tummy I'll write a review. Heard about the cherry thing-a-lings 5-6 years ago. Cherry is by far my favorite fruit for deserts and was able to convince my fam to go on a pilgrimage with me here. We've been back every year since. We've tried other stuff, all good, and gotten some honey, shirts, and other stuff here, but the cherry thing-a-lings are the best. Like a cherry+ fr

ATMOSPHERE: It's a small local bakery that garners attention yearly on the news during lent for its cherry thing-a-ling. Due to the size, they only allowed 10 people in at a time. I first saw the covering of this bakery on the news last year, but I didn't get a chance to make the journey. This year, after seeing it on the news again, I did. The line was semi-long and moved a long but did stall a little after a while. I arrived just after 6:30 am and entered the store after 7am. . It was cold out, too. FO

Cherry Thing-A-Lings are worth the trip and the wait!

I looked forward to the annual Treat . This year's Thing a Ling was less than inspiring. Prior years was a fritter type that has a crunch with delicious cherries inside. This year it was a dozen of doughnuts with cherry topping / glaze. Bring back the Fritter that made You famous.

The hour wait for cherry-thing-alings was absolutely worth it! They had everything set up pretty well and a good amount of parking. Update: Went in the hour before closing and the wait was nothing. Nicely done Schmidt!

I can't believe the line was out the door 30 minutes after closing! It was their famous Cherry Thing A Ling opening day. These things are delicious! Had I known I would've bought more. Very pleasantly surprised! Hurry they only sell these through the valentine's weekend.

Would love to try but can't get in as the line is winding down the sidewalk.. would highly recommend keeping store open for regular customers and having a satellite booth nearby for those wanting to purchase cherry thing-a-lings. Losing customers from the wait. Love to support small business but this needs better planning.

The once a year experience. Very nice people even with the high demand of the Cherry thing a lings. Was there at open and was out in 5 minutes

First time there getting Cherry ?? thingalings

Loved every bit of it. The atmosphere, the woman working at the front and the goodies we bought. My husband and I enjoyed it so much we opened up each item we bought to try on our way home. Will definitely be returning for more treats!

Lived up to the hype. Donuts were delicious and the snickerdoodles are elite.

What a gem! This bakery was a perfect way to start off our day while traveling home. The people were rays of sunshine and the food was delicious. We had biscuits and gravy and a pastry. If we lived closer we would be regulars! (Most people were getting take-out, but there is a little counter with stools where we ate.)

I had one of their famous seasonal cherry thing-a-lings, tasted pretty good, no complaints.

Their cherry thingalings are absolutely delicious. Once a year in February

It was a really long wait in line. Meet some really sweet people. It was cold but we took turns in the car

A must stop on President's Day weekend for Cherry-Thing-A-Ling's. Staff is always pleasant and very helpful.

Stood in line 2 1/2 hours, but warm Cherry- thing-a-lings made the wait worth it

The Donuts Were Great. However The Lady That Looked Me Up And Down, Seemed Very Judgemental, Maybe Because I Was Wearing Work Clothes, But She Was Well Over 60 And Is Still Punching A Time Clock .

A trip the Schmidt Bakery for the annual Cherry Thing-a-lings has become a tradition for my grandsons and me. For now over 8 years we rise early during President's Day weekend and make the hour-long drive for warm, unique and cherry filled goodness. Just got back from the 2024 run, jazzed and looking forward to 2025. Please keep'm coming Bertie!

Fantastic team and will definitely be making the trip back! Thank you.

Just got my cherry Thinglings today and they were the worst I ever had. They were very doughy and dry. This sizes were different sizes too. Not sure how old they were but I would never order again. In my opinion it was a waste of money and I don't recommend.

4 am on Day 2 of the Cherry Thing-a-Ling President's Day weekend 2019. Got mine @ 4:16....So delicious!!!!

Schmidt's Bakery and President's Day weekend means Cherry Thing A Lings! Had heard so much about these fritters through the years. But now that we are living only an hour away, my husband and I decided we had to make the trek to see what all the hoopla was about. And now we know! These fritters are definitely one of a kind. Well worth waiting in line for and you will wait in line. But the staff worked hard to move everyone through as quickly as possible and no one seemed to mind the wait. Will definitely be

Love this bakery!! We were here the day after Thanksgiving and loaded up. Family happy. ??

Wonderful personal service! Great buns and all kinds of delicious treats. Make your day better, stop here!

Yes! Cherry thing-a-ling is a-mazing!

Great little family bakery! Come for the Thing-a-lings!

Another amazing trip for Cherry thing-a-lings! Everyone was so kind and pleasant in the bakery! And the thing-a-lings melted in my mouth! So amazing! My 2 year old got a doughnut and has never finished a doughnut before- he ate it all up... I didn't even get to taste it, but it must have been yummy!

Got here at 4am for Cherry Thing-A-Lings and it was well worth it because they are delicious. The staff is very friendly too! 2nd year in a row now, we love this place!

If you've never gone on Presidents day weekend for the cherry thing a lings you should. Just plan on waiting in a long line. Dress accordingly lol. It's worth the wait and they only make them once a year.

10/10 recommend. Us here at Brandstetters KangaRoof ordered 3 dozen Cherry Thing A Lings & they are absolutely amazing. Pop em in the microwave for sec. OH MY LANTA. Thank you so much, from our team here at Kanga.

Traveled from Cincinnati Ohio for the famous Cherry thing-a-lings. We waited an hour to get 2 dozen. Between 3 of us we ate 10 before leaving the parking lot. My wife and I intend to return to sample the other bakery goods on a less popular day, but will also return next year for cherry thing-a-ling weekend.

Home of the Cherry Thing-A-Lings.

Coffee cake was delicious. Flavorful but not too sweet. Probably the best glazed donut I've ever had and the cranberry thingaling is pure bliss! The only thing keeping me from giving them a perfect 5 is that the coffee was aggressively mediocre. But let's be honest, coffee shops are everywhere but a truly great bakery is something special!

Cherry thing s ling time! Love it!!!

There might be a line when the cherry thing a lings are made for a few days. They are worth the wait. The thing a lings are so good you will want to get a bakers dozen. You can't pick a bad item the rest of the year always great products.

Always great coffee. I would like to see less icing and more variety such as baklava. The pastries are ok. I enjoy walking Rupert and getting a treat for him and myself on those sleepless winter nights! I know the winter is not endless when the Cherry thing a lings come along!

In line from 12:30- 2:30 Sat. Friendly fun crowd wearing masks and distancing. Outside benches and heaters at entrance. Second year to get Cherry Ting a lings. $17.00 a dozen. Fresh, hot, sweet and worth the day trip.

What a wonderful welcome on this peculiar day of solar eclipse. We live in Cincinnati and made a stop at the bakery for coffee and glazed donuts.

One star has nothing to do with the bakery itself. The bakery is amazing! We love it! My rating is towards an employee. We go in the early mornings before work sometimes. She is not friendly. She refuses to make lattes. The last straw was witnessing her getting hateful with a customer in front of me. Hateful to where the customer turns to leave and felt the need to call the employee a b****under her breathe. It's as though the employee truly does not like her job and does not want to work.

Crazy annual event but lots of fun! Yeh cherry thing-a-lings are amazing!

My parents used to take us to Schmidt's Bakery on Saturday mornings. We'd get a donut each and mom would get bread, donuts and fritters. I always try to visit the shop when I'm back in Indiana. Still delicious offerings and friendly staff.

Waited 1/2 hour when we got there at 7 am. Line out the door. Cherry thing-a-lings hot out if the fryers. Melt in the mouth good. Tried the chocolate drizzled ones this year. Now don't know which we like better, original or chocolate.

I bought the famous Cherry Thing a Lings!! Amazing. The reason for the 3 stars is the cream horns I purchased were hard as a rock. It may have even broke my tooth..

Sat in line for almost 3 hours. And it was worth every minute. The best fritter I've ever tasted.

The baked goods and donuts are always awesome. However, service is slacking. Why they have started smoothies and latte's with 1 blender is beyond me. Plus, there are signs on door about social distancing but people don't care. The store was packed. Wish that the workers had some consideration. Schmidt's could lose their license.

Littile cold out today so dress warm Clem Schmidt even came out and talked with us what a nice guy and a great experience!

If you aren't addicted to doughnuts before, you will be after you leave! Home of the "cherry thingaling" each decadent pastry is better than one you've eaten before! Can't get enough & can't put 'em down! No matter what your pastry fix is, stop in here to upgrade to an even more enjoyable sugar rush! Counting the days until cherry thingaling season next February! Yummy!

I've been here twice for the cherry thingalings and they are amazing. Worth an hour drive each way just be sure to stock up as they are once a year. Staff has been very nice and helpful too.

The one thing I love to do at Schmidt Bakery is to watch children design and create gingerbread houses in the month of December. Watching my niece, +Ellie Linn and +Beth Lewis Linn (grandmother) brings back lots of happy memories. My son Dylan loved to do a house and I loved watching him.

you guys are amazing! those people stuck on I-95 asking if it?s okay to pass out bread and you guys said yes. what an absolutely outstanding company. glad you guys are from indiana like me, i will only be buying bread from you guys for now on

Omg best best thing I've ate in a long long time .worth the hour wait...

Pumpkin spice donuts were very good. Glad they took credit cards, 'cause i bought a lot! Friendly service too.

I really can't say I like this bakery, since the line of customers was out the door, & the displays we're almost empty. It was national donut day. It wasn't worth my time to wait if I couldn't get what I truly desired.

Family owned, always friendly faces. Best baked treats in town, and around President's Day, you have to try a Cherry Thing-A-Ling. Delicious!

Very dirty. Poorly kept. Prices are insane considering the low quality. A man I think is the boss gave me weird looks when I was inside. I gave another star because the rest of the staff was very friendly, but I don't plan on coming back.

Love this place! Donuts are delicious! Best around. Can't wait for the cherry thing a lings to come back.

Great local bakery. Wonderful doughnuts and a wide assortment of pastries. Very friendly staff as well. The owner is almost always around and willing to have a conversation with you.

Just had a cherry thing-a-ling delivered to Indy via Mr. Todd. So thankful to live across the street from Mr. Todd senior. Score! They were amazing!!! Thank you!

Last year we drove to batesville for the cherry thing-a-lings and were not disappointed, this year we got them locally from our little coffee shop and what a bummer, can't buy by the dozen or even half dozen they are sold 2 in a pack for $5, which doesn't sound too bad until you open the bag and two little clumps fall out about the size of an egg, one bite??boo!

Don't miss their Presidents Day cherry thing-a-lings, they make 100's of 1000's of the delicious things. Buy more than you think you will need!

I had schmidt bakery do my wedding cake and it was horrible! It was a simple 3 layer square cake with just icing no fondant. I even provided a picture the day of ordering. The cake looked like an amateurs first attempt at a cake. The layers hung off each layer, the cake layers could be seen thru the icing and icing pearls were on the wrong part of each layer. I contacted the owner and she said she had talked to the cake coordinator and well basically she made excuse after excuse for every error. Funny there

Had the white fluffy filled long john- The donut was soft with good flavor. The filling was very tasty.

My father and I stopped in and he said it was the best Donut ?? he had ever had...

I am in Batesville for work sometimes and I?ve started coming here for cookies and coffee the last couple days. Everything tastes great and the ladies are very friendly.

Stood in line for 3 hours for my first cherry thingaling. Delicious! Staff was friendly and it was an experience!

First time getting cherry thing a lings. People were very nice. So we will see if we like them

We get every year for Cherry Thingalings, it's the best part of Presidents day weekend!

We love Schimdts! The customer service is good and the donuts are always amazing. I love the blueberry cake donuts.

$5 for a filled donut? Come to Schmidt's bakery for the small town feel and to get robbed by smiling ladies.

Best pastries and cakes anywhere! Glazed croissants are a special treat but get there early they sell like hotcakes!

Cherry thing a lings are the best!!!!better get an extra box,you may eat a box on the way home.....????

Cherry thing-a-lings and donuts are wonderful! Great traditional holiday favorite with the family.

Cherry thing-a-lings are excellent (especially warm) and worth the wait!

As someone who frequently travels and has been to many donut shops, this is my clear favorite.
