My girlfriend had not been in this neighborhood in 30 years, and when she saw it still open and we had to stop. The place is small, and it was surprising to have to wait in line just to get in the door. It was not a long wait, but that says it all. Everything is delicious. The service is A1, and there is plenty of history.
1st time checking out this spot, and I must say it was quite a pleasant experience. Came here on a Saturday morning and there was a line with about 10 people. The inside looks nice and clean. The baked goods in the display look great! We got the infamous burnt almond cake and some other things. Will definitely come back to try other baked goods.
This bakery has brought so much joy to so many people for so many years. There should be a special category for beloved long-standing institutions like this! Bring a burnt almond cake to your next event to see those who know light up on sight... and hear those who don't ask, "Where's this from?" upon taking a bite.
Signature burnt almond cake is amazing. Staff is always friendly. Prepared to wait for long lines!
I had visited this bakery for a burnt almond cake many years ago. Today I came to get a piece. I was shocked to see a line of about 2O people and it took about 20 mins to get in. They invite people in order. The service was great. The person serving me answered all the questions and gave me recommendations. They were out of bear claws and lemon meringues. I got my favorite. Almond burnt cake. It was about 2.30pm on Saturday when I visited. Keep in mind that when you pay you are asked to pay tips 15%. 20%, 2
Excellent baked goods from pastries to cakes and beyond live here and are sold at lower prices than inferior rivals. Very few bakeries of this quality exist anywhere.
I couldn't believe I fell in love with Peter's Bakery in San Jose. I came here in May to get my niece's wedding cakes and cookies. I ordered a couple of cupcakes on the side. The pastries were absolutely amazing. I would come back to get some more next time I am in the Bay Area.
Known for their burnt almond cake, I can confidently say no need to go anywhere else for it. They have absolutely perfected it, right amount of sweetness, cream is just right, it all hits. Also would def recommend trying their seasonal pumpkin almond cake, just as good if not better! Staff were also so incredibly lovely and kind, def a SJ gem
Traveled from Gilroy for their burnt almond cake which has always been the best! Also ordered a regular chocolate cake that wasn?t a hit at all. Extremely dry you couldn?t pick it up with a fork before it crumbled like sand. We ended up with more than half the cake left. BUT the burnt almond was gone in minutes.
What they say about their burnt almond baked goods is so true. Amazing pastries. Their custard ?clairs, lemon sqaures, and bear claws are also great. There is usually a line about 2 groups deep in the mornings but the staff are so efficient. I love their system of allowing only three groups in the store at once and one employee assigned to one group to keep track of the order right up till billing. They're also very reasonably priced.
I am glad I found this place, and happy to recommend. I walked in to buy a cake for my friend?s birthday, ended up picking the Lemon Crumble cake. The cake was really delicious, and we were all happy to eat a cake that is tasty and wasn?t covered with cream all over. It looked exquisite too. It only costed us ~30$. Will definitely order from here again to try out other flavors, I have my eyes on the burnt almond cake.
Highly recommend the Red Velvet cake (and of course the burnt almond cake). I came here right when they opened- first in line- requested a double layer red velvet with added wording for a celebration and it was definitely a hit! Would order again.
I used Peter's Bakery for our wedding and it was absolutely amazing. We went with three different flavors of burnt almond (pumpkin, vanilla, and swirl). We purchased column stands and created a "deconstructed 3 tier cake" ourselves. Peter's staff customized the cakes to capture our wedding requests perfectly. The cake was amazing in taste, appearance, and price. Can't recommend them enough.
This is a staple in San Jose. A true monument to living craftsmanship. The desserts here are exquisitely created. They are true pastry professionals. I have never had better eclairs, cream puffs, lemon cake, the Burnt Almond Cake is the piece de resistance. Absolutely bar none the greatest bakery I have ever had! Go here! If you are on a diet, skip it. If you are diabetic, risk it. If you are not a sweet person, you will be! Amazing, stupendous, magnificent, a culinary experience! ??????????????????????
I placed a cake order for a birthday party and then called to place a second cake order for another and when i made the second order i made sure to clarify the pickup for the first one and the girl assured me it was going to be ready for that day. Come to pick it up the day of the party for the first cake and turns out she had cancelled that order when she placed the other one so there was no cake for the party. she didn't even offer to compensate me in any way for her massive mistake and even gave me attit
There's definitely a real reason why this bakery quickly pops out in your google search. and believe me,?its popularity is legitimate. Early this week I was looking for a good bakery?to buy a birthday cake so I?followed my instinct and call them to make my order. The person who took the phone call was super friendly; she provided me with different bits of advice (it was clear that they were very busy, but she was very patient) and to avoid a long waiting time the?day of the pick up I decide to go yesterday
I bought two burnt almond cakes . This past Friday. One 1/4 sheet, one small total of $80 . Both cakes Did not taste right nor as good. Both we?re lacking flavor. They did not taste as good and like they used to.
I had ordered a cake, burnt almond 1/2 sheet, for my mom's 93rd birthday 4 day before I needed to pick it up. When I arrived they could not find my order. They really looked hard and they just couldn't find it. Let me tell you, within 15 mins they made the cake had it decorated beautifully. I was so impressed with the customer service, and to make up for the miscommunication they gave me a discount and some delicious pastries to boot. My family has been going to Peter's for as long as I can remember for mos
There?s Burnt Almond and during Thanksgiving there?s Pumpkin Burnt Almond. Period. There are shelves of really nice pastries but I wouldn?t know what they taste like because the Burnt Almond is the only thing I ever get and it?s the reason this place has been here for over 85 years. I?ve been coming here for over 40 years. The city should make this place a city landmark. Peter, the cake you made for my sons birthday which landed on Thanksgiving was a masterpiece. Almost too beautiful to eat. Almost.
Quite impressed with bakery. Shocked by the huge number of cakes baked and ready to be sold. Also amazed by the selection of pastries available behind the shelf for ordering. Had pre-ordered a cake online for morning pick up. Got there at designated pick up time and some how they couldn't find the order. They were super professional and quickly checked if the baker was still available to quickly get me one. (Mine was a burnt almond cake with a carrot cake filling, so it wasn't just the regular burnt
Don?t be scared by the line outside the bakery
I love the burnt almond cakes and cupcakes here! I've only personally visited here twice--once before Shelter-in-Place and once during--but each time the staff is super nice and friendly, and the treats delicious. I request the cake for my birthday every year ever since trying their cupcakes.
Delicious, and so soft. This cake is HUGE. Should've just ordered the single layer cake, but I didn't have an idea on how big it would've been. The cake itself has a great flavor and it invites you to eat more. I am interested in tasting the other cakes they have on their menu. There is a warning on the website of the lines being long. It is a small shop and only 3 groups allowed in at one time. I ensured my order would be scheduled for the earliest possible time on Saturday morning. By the time I got the
Busy, long line! But fast service when you get in. Not to many verity of pastry, maybe 10 or less than 15 kind of pastry and cookies. But very delicious . We tried Eclairs, whipped cream apple turnover, choc choc and lemon crunch, which was one from each kind of available pastry. My favorite was Lemon Crunch. I think it is the only bakery in this neighborhood, and it is good.
Sooo there are bakeries that make pretty things that are simply visual but have nothing but colors and sugar going for them. THEN you have places like Peter?s where there is the aesthetic appeal that is backed up by quality you can taste. Simple but traditional good quality. The lemon meringue tart was everything I wanted and yes, it was legit meringue with the light crispy airiness that you?d expect. So glad a friend recommended this place!
The best Burnt Almond Cake. Very fluffy and moist. I wish I bought two of their larger cakes ??. Parking is plenty after 10:30 am and the line isn't quite as long.
If you don?t know the fame of this bakery by now, that means you haven?t tried their burnt almond or almond burnt cake yet. I don?t remember the exact name but we all know what it is and so do they!! All their pastries are fluffy and flavorful. Exquisite sweets that you will crave always. The parking lot is hard to get a spot at, but you can always park further or in the residential area, its worth the walk! And if there is a long line, lemme tell you, it?s worth the wait!! Try any of their goodies and I
They have a perfect Burnt Almond cake 5/5, but passed that I have not been happy with their cakes. I recently had their Strawberry cake and it was 1/5-almost not edible- sparsely strawberries in the cake. The ratio is not as good as their iconic burnt almond cake. After having a slice I had the throw away the cake, too much cake not enough strawberries . ??
Delicious Cakes, Cupcakes and doughnuts! The chocolate cake is great! The strawberry white cake with strawberry jam and whipped cream is perfectly great! You can phone in an order and pick up. I highly recommend Peter's Bakery! ???
That big line you see? Yeah it's worth it. Buttery creamy burnt almond cake is always good never goes old or uneaten. The pastries are so good! The whipped cream turn over is delicious! What I really like about this place though, is the homely feeling. A staple of San Jose culture for sure. Makes me feel closer to home eveytime I eat Pete's bakeries ????????.
My family have been going to this bakery for over 40+ years, 4 generations. After today we will take our business elsewhere. Mariah is extremely unprofessional and rude. We had to give her our order 4 times and then she walks 2 feet away from us and starts making fun of us with her co-worker about our order. They both laugh assuming we weren?t paying attention what they were saying and doing. It is extremely rude and as an adults we don?t have time to be treated in this manner by the youth. Austin who
Perfectly moist and sweet ?? Loved the burnt almond square!
Pretty great spot for some sweet and delicious breads and pastries. Came on a Monday afternoon and grabbed some chocolate cookies (that apparently have leftover donuts and dough in them?!), the tart cake. Amicable and quick response from staff.
Very efficient, and very aware of the safety of their staff and others. Love access to the menu via QR code outside while you wait. The reason I'm here today, the hot cross buns are available! Update, April 19th. Stopped for my last visit before I go to my next destination. Picked up a smattering of thises and that's to enjoy over the weekend. Love that they have the Monopoly San Jose game available.
Loved Thier pastry. I had almond one. Wow just wow best bakery in bay area so fast I have tried. There was line to enter the place no wonder why people come here. Most of the people try almond cake looks like that's Thier famous one.
11/5 Beyond amazing! The burnt almond and the carrot cake are a favorite ?? definitely a must place to try. We enjoyed our pastries
The bakery serves one of the best cakes in the Bay Area - almond burnt cake. Price is a bit steep but worth it for the taste. I have been going there for few years now. The lines to buy is usually long and that explains the popularity of this place.
Unbelievably Awesome !!! Not just the preparation, but the prices as well. This was our first time at the bakery, and we are going back very soon. Whats left on the plate is the last of 5 items we got 10 minutes ago
Cake: Dry, but you get what you paid for ($20-25). I had to add water to the cake just to eat it. Buttercream is okay, but I have never liked buttercream anyways. They just encouraged me to get the cake with buttercream frosting. Additionally, there was free writing for the cake. Service: Great! The girl who helped me out was super patient. Atmosphere: Nice and empty at 5PM. *parking may be difficult
I couldn?t believe people are handling food without gloves.. one man was wearing gloves out of the five I saw? using wax paper on cookies.. but picking up cup cakes with bare hands?
First time visiting. Interesting place since there's no price posted at all. Friendly service.
Pros: I'm surprised I didn't find this gem of a bakery sooner. Their signature dish (burnt almond cake) is popular for a reason - it's just the perfect amount of custard filling and sweetness. And the cost is way lower than that of chains like Paris Baguette and 85 degrees cafe. Would highly recommend this place to everybody I know. Cons: The cake base looks like styrofoam and is not very stable. Moving the cake out of the box and onto a cake stand is a tad bit tricky because of that. Side note: You'd thi
Great pastries & cakes. Light airy cream is nice. Service is top notch, friendly attentive staff.
The custard is delicious! I only experienced the custard in the Burnt Almond Cake. Need to go back to try some of the many other items they make.
Love this bakery! Always fresh! Super friendly staff! Old fashioned and delicious!
I love this place have been coming here since 1990?.and the older I get the more the cakes are starting to take over, although the cakes are great please Peters don?t leave donuts on the wayside, it seems every year their presence there gets smaller and smaller, to now not even making any for walk ins on christmas eve! please don?t forget us small percentage of us donut lovers your donuts are my favorite in alllll the world and i have yet to find another
I've tried all three types of their burnt almond cake - vanilla, chocolate, and marble - all were moist and light. Their pastries are also heavenly, not too sweet. Make sure to try the strawberry ring when in season!
I just visited Peter?s Bakery personally for the first time today and I am impressed. The pastries are delicious but what really stood out was the excellent customer service. There were only 3 employees and plenty of customers, but they treated every customer with professionalism, kindness, and a friendly attitude. I will definitely be returning in the future. I appreciate employees who take the time to greet and thank their customers and Peter?s Bakery employees truly make you feel that your business is ap
It has been a while since I went to Peter's Bakery. I only came for a piece of pie, but I walked out with a mini lemon meringue, apple square, oatmeal raisin cookies, blueberry pastry, 2 brownies, and some rock chip cookies. ??
We are very fortunate to have this bakery around. It is clean, the folks there are attentive and polite, and I have yet to have anything from behind the counter that I haven't bought more than once. Their burnt almond cake is absolutely delicious and they currently have strawberry cream puffs with fresh, whole strawberries. Did I mention they come in toddler size and kindergartner size? Not to say you'd feed one to them, that is literally their size. The "smaller" one is easily the size of my head. If you
There?s a reason Peter?s Bakery has been around since 1936. The burnt almond cake = literal perfection. Do yourself a favor and order like 10 slices, it?s so good.
The one and only place for the famous Burnt Almond Cake. You could get it as the classic white, Chocolate or Marble. But that's not all they have other baked goods here too and I don't really know what else is good here but they all look so delicious still. Lunardi's have the burnt Almond Cake too but something about theirs isn't quite right, I'm thinking it could be the sliced almonds they use instead of the crushed one. That's another review on it's own though. So with COVID only two customers are allowed
My daughter bought bear claws here for us. They were the best I ever tasted. Full of fresh nuts, a delicious, pastry. I asked m daughter: Is Peter's a German bakery? I think Austrian, she said. We read your history; Peter is Portuguese and his bakery is loved by the nations. Great philosophy too. Best wishes and thank you Peter's.
This isn?t a complaint but more like a suggestion or observation. I ordered a birthday cake for my grandaughter. The decorations were anemic. The cake itself was very dry, The fudge filling bland. A bakery with such a name in San Jose and many years of serving the public should not be producing a sub par product. Something has to change, the recipe maybe. Even your burnt almond cake is too dry. Owners need to taste what?s being sold to the public. I don?t thing you will be happy
One of the few places to get burnt almond cake. Delicious. Very good service and friendly staff.
After Dick's Bakery burned down, Peter's Bakery remains the only purveyor of burnt almond cake in the region. Unfortunately, Peter's version is a bland, one-note facsimile of Dick's. For $20, you get the 8", 2-layer burnt almond cake. The burnt almond cake is a white cake, with a butter-flavored whipped cream, and almonds covering the outside. The cake is very light in sweetness if you don't like a rich cake, but that's all the compliments I can give the cake. The cake itself was dry and the cream was lac
Burnt almond cake is a must have. So are all the other items we tried - blueberry loaf & lemon tart. Baked to perfection and not cloyingly sweet. Slightly unhappy with the chocolate cake. The staff is managing the long queues and Covid related safety very proficiently, very commendable.
Love this place and the strawberry ring my favorite wish it was year around
This is a legendary Portuguese bakery open since 1936! Best known for their Burnt Almond Cake... which is to die for! They also have numerous other fresh daily options including an amazing strawberry cream pastry. Get there early because once an item is gone, you gotta wait until tomorrow! And that is a bummer.
Ordered their famous burnt almond cupcakes. They did not disappoint. Also ordered an assortment of their amazing cookies. The quality is as fine as any bakery in the South Bay. Maybe even better!
Is the best bakery in Santa Clara County best burnt almond cake they do a real good job on your decorations on them too get there early expecting a line I hope it's around for another fifty years does it close down like all the other classic place in San Jose??
This will be my last visit to Peters. I wont wait over an hour for an order. Then when i gave my name i waited 25min for it to be decorated. Even then none of decoration choices I selected were adhered to. I thought i'd enjoy an eclair...but nope its not whip cream it fake pastry pride. The whole trip is about 3 hours. Got to find a better local bakery.
Other than the line of 7people before me, which just serves as a testament of how yummy their goodies are. The staff is sweet and the treats are e en better.
Was disappointed my sister picked up my birthday cake Friday the 5th September. Had 2 layer coconut whip cream fresh strawberry. Cake was dry and couldn't see only a little strawberry quests said were are the strawberry. She will never order again !
This place is amazing ?? And yes it is true there burnt almond cake is the best cake I have ever had.
My mom use to take me there as a child. It was always amazing and still has the same look inside! I miss the sweet treats and my mom. I'm 52 and my mom is no longer here. I wish I was close enough to get those wonderful pastries to share with my family.
Wonderful bakery!! All the pastries are great. The workers are dealing with this Covid 19 just like the rest of us and are doing there best so be patient with them. They are doing a great job.
I love Peter's Bakery for its burnt almond everything. The cakes, cupcakes in vanilla, chocolate, and marble.
I love this bakery but the old lady was super unprofessional. Yelling at customers is a no go. She needs a reality check but other than her everyone else is super awesome and the cakes are good. Due to the bad customer service I didn?t purchase a cake for Christmas this year for our family it?s tradition for us every holiday. But I?d rather not spend money where people think they can talk to people however they please. But I?ll try to go there again next holiday hopefully the old lady will be in better spir
OMG this place is outstanding burnt almond cakes are wonderful donuts cookies this is the place to get everything , everything is so GOOD ??
The place is clean. The pastries are delicious. Everything is good ??.
Great bakery, if you eat in the car ask for a fork, pastries are so fresh and falling apart
Ordered the almond cake and chocolate almond cake, both were fluffy and delicious!
8/27/22 well knom local place for fresh pastries and bakeries
My friend bought a strawberry ring cake on Saturday and we opened the box and a young cockroch came running out of the cake. I have bought a lot of cakes there before but this was the first one with a cockroch. It was the most disgusting thing ever. We didn't eat the cake and I threw it out. I'm going to call them Tuesday morning to tell them what happened. No it did not come from our place.
I recently ordered a cake and a dozen cupcakes for a party and my guests were absolutely in love with the burnt almond. It was a hit! The person who helped me customize the cake was patient and did whatever she could to make sure my request was handled carefully. I can't wait to be back to order other desserts from here. What a hidden gem!
Eh.. was my first time here and was expecting everything to be greart but it was just ok. Didn't dislike anything but nothing was, 'wow great'. Prob won't go back.
So my husband and I decided to try Peter's bakery for ourselves to see what the hype was all about when it came to their burnt cakes. We ordered bothe the chocolate and marble burnt cake, each an individual slice (2 marble and 1 chocolate). We actually enjoyed both flavors. The cake was not overly sweet. Parking was not bad, the bakery has a limit of how many ppl are allowed inside at once, but this line goes pretty quickly.
Finally tried their famous Burnt Almond cake.
The Burnt Almond Cake tasted pretty good! I may have to try it more times, but while I really liked it, I also felt like it kinda just tasted like a Twinkie. Like, that's not bad at all, since I like the taste of Twinkies, but I'm not quite sure if that's enough to really say it's that much better than one. There were plenty of other good pastries here, too, like the Strawberry Ring. I am open to visiting again.
This is the absolute best bakery! The burnt is almond cake is so delicious! The pastrys are so soft and the filling is always fresh and not too sweet. Definitely worth the two hours of a drive!
Long time San Jos? favorite. It's worth the wait in line. Best known for their burnt almond pieces. Many items to choose from and all of them are great. Parking can be tricky but usually it works out after a few minutes. The strawberry ring is delicious. We get one every time we are in town.
Burnt almond cake is the best cake I ever had.
Though I haven't had the privilege of tasting their Burnt Almond Cake, I tried their blueberry cupcake, fruit bar and chocolate/strawberry pastry. Even though I have a sweet tooth, all the items turned out to be too sweet for me. I won't be able to try this bakery out again, even though the prices were very reasonable. However, it seems that lot of people love it and flock the place for it's burnt almond cake.
I ordered a half sheet of their famous burnt almond cake for an engagement party and I was able to make the order 2 days in advance no problem. The staff was friendly and efficient when placing the ordering and when picking it up. The cake was delicious and many of the guests took note of where I got the cake! I'm happy to support this local bakery and I'm excited to try their other cakes and pastries as well.
I was born & raised in the area of E. San Jose -the baked goods are super delicious! we always used to get our whipped cream birthday cakes :-) then when they started making the burnt almond cakes that made birthdays even better! If you want to get your burnt almond cake you're going to have to wait in a long line for a while unless you're first in line! keep that in mind. Good folks n smiling faces!
This is a San Jose tradition! Especially the Burnt Almond Cake. The last two times I have been there I picked up 3-burnt almond cake, Sesame Dinner Rolls, a Pineapple Danish Ring, an Apricot Danish Ring, and a variety of pastries. And they are all been a hit not a miss in all of them. I will continue to get things from them.
Loved everything i got. Carrot cake is my favorite so I am very picky and this is delicious, the Apple pie is not my favorite but I loved it and the chocolate cake ?????? one of the best I have ever had. Highly recommend them all. Absolutamente deliciosos.
