Max's Donut Shop

Max's Donut Shop

Reviews Summary

Most reviews praise Max's Donuts for their delicious, fresh, and oversized donuts, with many calling them the best they've ever had. Favorites include glazed, maple bars, and kolaches, often described as soft, sweet, and melt-in-your-mouth. However, some note a decline in quality, citing cold, overly sweet, or flavorless donuts, especially after ownership changes. A few complain about high prices or limited variety. The shop gets busy, with popular items selling out early. While longtime fans remain loyal, newer customers are sometimes disappointed, particularly with cinnamon rolls lacking flavor. Overall, it’s a beloved spot with standout donuts, but consistency issues divide opinions.

When I first moved to Texas, this spot was the greatest. They were really good not to mention the people and the atmosphere. I'm not sure if they changed owners or managers, but the quality has gone down quite a bit. The donuts are not as fresh s they used to be and seemed to have changed shape and taste. The employees are not as friendly as they used to be either. Lastly, they used to run out of glazed options well before 12p, and you could order some the day before, but now the order time is 2 or 3 days ah

One of the best donuts that I ever had, so soft and delicious! So Good, I ordered eclair donut and pink glaze also jalape?o kolache they all were so delicious !!! you OK

This place was bustling to say the least! We ordered a dozen different donuts and a couple kolaches. The donuts were incredibly soft and delightful, despite a 20+ mins drive home. The kolaches were tasty and fluffy. I definitely understand what all the hype is about because these donuts were really top notch.

These donuts are some of the best donuts I?ve had in DFW. Highly recommend. There may be a line when you arrive, but I?d say that?s always a good sign that you?ve picked the right place ??

Stellar maple bar, will be back to try others! I really love how this place stayed busy in the manner of 4-6 mins that I was there. I ordered my favorite donut a classic maple bar. Melt In your mouth freshness. Friendly & welcoming staff. Keep it up.

I could not wait to visit this place after being gifted donuts at work. It did not disappoint! I even gifted to two friends to pay it forward! Delicious donuts- just like the small town bakery in North Dakota! The apple fritters are crunchy and moist, the eclairs and cinnamon rolls were huge and soft, the raspberry filled were incredible and the cake donuts were perfect!

I moved to Allen in 1992 and have been a long time customer of Max's Donuts. My family and friends used to set down and for an amazing breakfast. It is my opinion the new owners have little or no regard for keeping the store as it was from the beginning. I entered the store and I am amazed that you cannot set down to enjoy one of the best donuts that I have ever had in my life. The shops does not clean the floors, air vents, and seems to think it is acceptable to use the seating area as a storage facil

The absolute best donuts I?ve ever had! Everything there is great, but the cinnamon rolls and the chocolate glazed donuts are my personal favorites! Also, the employees are super nice.

Every time we come back to Texas, we HAVE to stop by MAX's donuts! The boys get smokies, but I'm there for that special chew these donuts have plus the hundreds of memories growing up in Allen when this WAS the spot lol. Love this small hometown shop. My favorite

This place use to have hot donuts 85% of the time and was the best shop in Allen. The new ownership has cold donuts 85% of the time unlike previous ownership. I got to find a new shop that serves fresh hot donuts.

I really wanted to like these donuts, but they're an odd texture (and shape) and have WAY too much icing to donut ratio. Generally, a chocolate frosted is on a plain donut, but these we're frosted on top of an already heavily glazed donut ?? My son and I can normally eat 2-3 each, but we couldn't even finish one. Not worth the wait in a super long line, imo! There are much better quality donut shops in the immediate area.

The customer service is really a zero....you can really tell the REAL Max's is dunzo! The new establishment is ONLY in it for the money...So sad too! They had the best biz in Texas...not anymore!.....forgot to add these are blownuts, not donuts!!!!

Max?s is actually the only donut shop that I would drive 30+ minutes across two towns for. When I tell you the donuts are crazy good, it?s crazy good melt in your mouth type of donuts. I could eat a whole dozen of just plain glazed! Everything is so fresh and once they run out they close so go early or call ahead and order! Old Fashioned Cake, donut holes, and maple are family faves too! The kolache type sausage rolls are fluffy and are perfect for on the go. Because we live in Frisco and barely ever g

I wouldn't call Max's Donut Shop a donut shop. I would call it a little taste of heaven. I have had many donuts in my life time, however these are very different. It's almost like a cake. Very fluffy, however with substance to them. A friend of mine says they are the best donuts in Allen. I would recommend you to stop by and give them a try.

I first had these in 2015 while visiting and they were very good. I tried them again today and they are still as good as I remember and pillowy soft. They are very busy and apparently only make a certain amount of donuts a day despite operation hours. You must go at opening if you want to experience the entire selection. I was there at 8:30 and the line wrapped around the store with minimal selection. By the time I made it to the front, they put a sign up that said ?almost sold out?. Just FYI if you are dri

I?ve been going to Max?s since a kid, growing up in Allen. I go every Friday morning to buy donuts for some of my employees and my wife picks up donuts for their church on Sunday mornings. We have never had one complaint about the donuts and everyone always tells us they are the best donuts they have had. On Sunday mornings our dogs get to go on a truck ride with us to pickup the donuts. They are always super excited because they get their own donuts holes!

Literally the best original glazed donut ever made. I drive from Royse City to Allen for these donuts. I had a donut wall with 4 dozen donuts at my birthday party, it?s really nothing else to say.

These are the best donuts I have EVER had! I'm gonna stay big backed for life with this place.

Donuts run out at 10am. I wanted to be sure ??. I have come at 8am and everything was plentiful and there was 10 ppl in line. The donuts just melts in your mouth and you just felt the world is right with every bite you take.

Stopped to get donut holes for a treat for my students. It was nice to be able to get in and out quickly. Usually there is a line wrapped around the inside or outside.

Best tasting donuts in the North TX area. The quality of their bread is so much different than other donut shops. Their donuts have all of the great taste without the overpowering sugar like a lot of other donut shops. Highly recommend this place. Try their kolaches and glazed donuts.

Best donut shop you?ll ever try. The chocolate glazed is perfection. Just tried the Pumpkin spice and it?s incredible!!!

Good donuts, but they have not been the same since COVID. If you don't get there right when they open, there is a high chance they'll be out of pretty much everything except the glaze donuts. They also only do to-go orders now - no more dining in.

I have been stalking this donut shop for about 3 months ????. I have tried a bunch of donuts by far ?? this is now my #1 . Although I am in Dallas I did make my way on the other side for these ??. Reasonable price and Super Delicious ???? Oddly shaped and unique ??

when you walk in, there is a modest setting, but as you start to order, you realize how generous and kind the staff is. additionally, the donuts are absolutely wonderful, they are just melt-in-your-mouth good. the perfect amount of glaze to dough ratio. we love this little neighborhood donut shop, and we will certainly be here again.

i went this morning and bought a dozen donuts and 3 separate glezed, the dozen looked fresh but the other 3 were definitely not made this morning, been going for years here, a little disappointed ??

Saying the donuts here are amazing, is totally under - selling it. Their donuts are like the softest fluffiest clouds with a light, crisp, exterior, and the perfect chewiness, that just melt in your mouth. They are larger than any donuts I've seen elsewhere, and one or two will fill you up, while leaving you craving more.

Max?s donuts are not only delicious, but their staff is friendly, fast and efficient. Which is important when you can typically find a line. A testament to the above mentioned delicious donuts.

As someone who has been to many donut shops and bakerys. Max's Donuts offers some the best, donuts and kolaches. They are soft and delicate in texture. Taste sweet without being overbearing. I highly recommend stopping by if you are in the area. Its worth your time and money.

With over a dozen Dallas firefighters eating Max?s donuts for the first time, all concurred that they were the best donuts that they have ever had. We definitely picked a winner to serve at breakfast! We will definitely be going back!!

Drove half and hour here to try them out a second time. The first time, they had run out and only had cake donuts. Cake donuts were okay. This time I got there a bit earlier and they had glazed donuts. The chocolate and glazed were way too sweet. Not enjoyable at all. The ladies working there were nice.

Every donut was super fluffy and delicious

My kids absolutely love the monthly fun donuts they make!

Great prices. Very busy place. Doughnuts are huge and good. They last few days.

Delicious donuts, usually vendors bring them to us, but I was in the neighborhood and went myself. Line goes fast, staff is friendly, donuts are amazing.

+ This place is good and it's well loved for a reason. +/- The donuts are very unique and a love/hate kind of thing. - They sell out very quickly - Variety is lacking - Definitely lost quality when sold a few years ago, but still better than some other places.

It's a hole-in-a-wall mom-n-pop shop. I would only rate the simple glazed donut because that's what I bought. It was still warm. Big and pillowy. Best one in Texas I've tasted. Better than DD or KrispyKreme.

Hands down my families favorite donut shop! We have frequented this place for years and always had a good experience. The cinnamon rolls are ??but do run out if you don?t get there early. We ordered ahead for the holidays and everything was prepared correctly and fresh and delicious.

My favorite donut place! Original glazed is so fluffy and tasty.

First time coming here in the morning and it was great I got one dozen donuts and they were great I loved the glazed donuts would come here again.

After realizing we haven't had a Max's donut in about 8 years, I was looking forward to what was once the best donut you can find in the area. Visited this morning. After a not-so-great experience with service and the worst donuts and kolache I can remember eating in a long time, I did my research to see if the original owners sold. Sure enough, they did and it's obvious. It seems their recipes weren't passed along to new ownership, unfortunately. Writing this review as a warning to anyone who hasn't been

A truly transcendent donut experience known by locals for years as the best place for sticky sugary treats. A bastion of delicious delights to tempt even the staunchest sugar nay sayers. The plain glazed is the family favorite with the kolaches and fritters bringing up a close second. Try this place!! On the weekend you will wait in line, fair warning.

Max's has been the donut standard of North TX for the 35 yrs we've been in Allen.

Best donuts I've ever had. Atmosphere? Looks like they got shut down for COVID and never opened up a place to sit down. Don't let that turn you away. In a world of donut shops on every corner these are actually special. Most high end fancy donuts shops use the same dough and put fancy stuff on top. Not them, and not pricey.

Max's donuts are by far the best donuts in Dallas. When they make donuts, they use the good donut flour. You need to get there early, and there will be a line to the door or out the door. Remember, there are people behind you. Know what you want when you get to the counter.

The best donuts hands down!!!! But you have to get there early because they sell out quick! Strawberry glazed donut is to die for! Also try the blueberry cake donut!!

Easily the best mom and pop donuts in DFW. They always have friendly service. Each donut is super fluffy and airy but with the density of a great donut. Not sure how they do it but the flavors are better than any other donuts around. Every visit here is delightful! They do tend to run out sooner than most other shops so plan for an earlier visit

Probly the best donuts I have had in a while and tend to wake up for work extra early just to grab a donut on the way

Hark! To all ye seekers of sweetness, I tell thee of a wondrous place, a fair doughnut shoppe wherein joy and delight abound. Verily, upon mine visit to this humble abode, I was met with treasures of dough, round and golden, bathed in honeyed glaze and sprinkled with spiced sugar, as though crafted by the hands of angels. The doughnuts, soft as downy clouds, were as warm as a hearth on a cold winter?s eve, filling mine heart with cheer and contentment. Each morsel was a blessing unto mine tongue, so rich a

Very very busy. The donuts are fresh and budget friendly. The staff are all about getting the people in and out..so you do feel somewhat like a herd of cattle. Maybe open a second location so you can give better customer service?

I was there this morning 7:10 am for my son?s birthday. My son wants glazed donuts three dozen so I ordered and the lady who was serving me she said ,, she can give me two dozen glazed and need to choose another type it?s okay but my question is I saw still they have lots of glazed donuts there but they don?t gave me? I asked them they said we don?t have enough and give my next person same one ?? And the cashier said my owner said no more and she said I have to take care next customer?!! really don?t unders

As I travel the country - I'm always on the hunt for a great donut...Max's is easily in my top 2...from Ironwood, MI to Austin, TX from Portland, ME to Portland, OR - I've eaten a LOT of donuts and I developed a saying - there ain't no good donuts in the South - which was very true until a few weeks ago. Frankly #1 or #2 best donuts I've had and #1 for value. I recently got a dozen (I had no clue) from a place in Danbury, CT that cost $48...no kidding - and they were nowhere near the quality/taste of Max'

Max's is very easily the best donuts I have ever had. In fact, if I am going to be buying donuts, I refuse to get them from anywhere else after trying Max's for the first time about 10 years ago. They are normal donuts, not like the tricked up ones you get at Hurts or Voodoo (both great places!). They have classics like Glazed, Chocolate, Cake, etc. And they do each of these MUCH BETTER than any other donut shop! Each donut is big, soft, and so sweet and tasty. They glaze all of the donuts all around, not

The most delicious glaze donuts I?ve ever tasted. They were still good the next day.

Literally the best donuts I?ve had!

Theeeee best donuts in the world!!! I don't even care for donuts but these are sooooo good!!!! Only wish they stayed open later!!! I can never catch them open

Best donuts I?ve ever had?

The last three times ive been there they just dont have enough donuts. This is not rocket science. It you've sold all your apple fritters by 9;30 am make some. more. They had a few varieties but nothing I wanted. Also what kind of a donut store doesnt have custard for their fillings? This used to me my favorite store but not anymore. Honestly who stops making. donuts after 9 when they dont close until 11:30?

HUGE donuts. Can't beat the price, especially for the size. Hands down our favorite place for donuts

I went to this donut place for the first time because everyone had such positive reviews!! I actually thought they were pretty expensive for donuts and kolaches.I had an ?clair which was so incredibly sweet, I couldn't even eat it!! It's almost as if it was glazed with so much chocolate on top!! The kolaches were 1.39 each and quite small. Although they seemed nice, I won't be going back!

Listen, we?ve been Max?s customers for 30 years. Hands down best donuts ever. When our family goes to a different town, we legit use a ?is it Max?s level? scale to judge every other donut shop?and I gotta tell you I haven?t been to another one that comes close. The best of the best.

Nothing fancy about this place just your normal donut shop but these donuts are amazing best around i drive 20 miles to this donut shop passing many other donut shops normally a short wait in line but well worth it i highly recommend giving them a try the cinnamon rolls are the best ive ever had from any donut shop an they are huge

I grew up in Allen and used to go here all of the time, so many memories from my child hood. I had not had it in years and went this morning and man I was so disappointed. No tables to sit at, all the little league plaques that used to hang, gone. The smokies, are not smokies, they taste like every other donut shop. I am so sad about this and its so disappointing.

1.50$ for the smallest kolaches I've ever seen. Order only kolaches, surprised that this is the first place to ever not heat up kolaches and served them to me cold. Needless to say won't ever be returning.

Everyone at my work loved their donuts.

Maxes it the worlds best donut shop everything about it is just AMAZING

It is one of the best donut shops in the area . My coworker love them, and it makes it worth the 20-minute drive (out of the way to work) to pick up Max's Donut.

We drive far & wide for Max?s donuts! Their donuts are all good quality but their chocolate glazed donuts are to die for! A must try if you?re wanting a good donut!

Best donut place hands down. I hate to go bc I have to eat at least two donuts. Friendly staff and did I mention amazing donuts?

Probably the best donuts in this local area that I have discovered, and on top of that great prices as well. The downside is that they get super busy so go early. My only nitpick (that is personal preference) is I wish they weren?t so overwhelmingly sweet. Most of the flavors get lost because the sugar is so dominant. They glaze EVERYTHING.

I finally tried one of these donuts after so many people have said that they are the best donuts in the area. I seriously do not understand why this is the thought! I tried a glazed donut. Completely disgusting full of oils and soggy and just gross. No flavor whatsoever, just pure powdered sugar mixture. Wasn't flaky. Wasn't airy. Not a good donut just a soggy cake. As soon as I ate it, stomach was upset and my teeth hurt. Glad others like this place but I suggest going elsewhere.

I still eat them, only because no other donut shop compares... but since selling Max's has gone down hill. They stopped making the pigs in the blanket with beef, when you ask for warm donuts, the kitchen is always closed. I miss the old owners dearly ?? ??. It's not the Max's I grew up eating for sure.

The Chinese lady that gets the donuts for you is very rude.. seems her attitude changes when it comes to the black customers. I used to love this shop but she makes it highly uncomfortable.

Just stopped this morning expecting to get the same donuts I loved from a few years ago. Wish I had read the reviews here before wasting my time and money. The donuts I got today are horrible. They're bad Krispy Kreme knock-offs. If I wanted Krispy Kreme, I would have gone there. It say a lot for the attitude of the new owner that they thought changing the recipe is what their customers wanted.

Very disappointed. Donuts were under fried, way to much glaze and apple fritters had no flavor. Way to expensive for quality. Went on a Friday morning at 8:30 am.

By far the best donuts I've ever had. I'm not sure what it is about these things, they're dense and saturated with flavor (and equally awful for you, I'm sure). The "old fashioned" buttermilk style donut is amazing. And the best part is, even though they know they're the best in town, they dont charge any more for their donuts than anybody else.

Absolutely best donuts around! The donuts are nothing fancy but fresh and delicious! Glazed and chocolate glazed are their main staples and the other types of specialty donuts sell out quickly on weekends. There can often be a line but service is usually quick. The inside is nothing special but the donuts make up for any lack of atmosphere.

Max's Donut shop is one of the best donut shops I have been too. I have come here for years and their quality is second to none. Voted one of the top donut places in the DFW metroplex there is something here for everyone. I enjoy their maple bars but their donut holes are excellent and come with glaze or chocolate. Their cinnamon rolls are as large as an adult's head (which is a steal for the price). I would highly suggest a visit while in town. You wont be disappointed.

We have attempted to come to this place 4 times this year. Considering the drive needed to get here, it's really disappointing that we've only been able to successfully get donuts 1 time. Arriving almost an hour before they say they close- on a Sunday, which I would think would be one of your biggest donut days of the week- they are already closed. Why not honor your hours? If the hours no longer match what you're willing to produce, then change your hours.

The quality and the taste of the donuts has really gone downhill in the past year or more. I could not taste (nor see) cinnamon in the cinnamon roll and cinnamon is a pungent spice. Cream filled was gooey and gross with little to no flavor. Threw most of them out and fed the rest to the dogs. Smokey joes were good though.

Been coming here for years ever since I was a kid and the taste of this place has never changed, donuts are one of the best in the area. Once you've had Max's you'll never want to go anywhere else, and that's a fact.

The most delicious donuts I have ever eaten! Oversized, fluffy, melts in your mouth one of a kind!

Excellent donuts. Better than average.

Was Best donuts in Allen! We had not been here in several months and was surprised on selection , how the donuts appearance were and quality of customer service. It all seemed "off" from what we were accustomed to before relocating out of Allen. When we checked reviews we saw that it is a new owner. That explained it. The standards he had are not what current owner has for sure. Very sad. The donuts tasted weird and not even warm. One of the girls at the front was actually eating when I walked in and then t

I don?t get the hype. Cinnamon rolls had ZERO cinnamon flavor. They also do not carry a wide variety of flavors. Overall, underwhelmed.

Best place to get donuts. The staff is always so nice. They remember the regulars. The glazed donuts are always warm and the chocolate glazed donuts melt in your mouth and it?s just such an amazing experience eating here! Also my all time favorite is the blueberry cake donut. It is not to dense and it?s fresh every time!

This is the donut shop of your dreams. Good old classic donuts and flavors, which are warmer and more delicious than the Krispy Kreme?s of the world. Donut runs deep in Max?s!

Um, their ?? donuts don't taste like all the other spots that close around noon. They're all decent and interchangeable. However, THIS PLACE is different! Absolutely delicious! You can tell when you see them that they're not the same recipe as everyone else. I will be driving from Mckinney back to this spot...
