Madsen Donuts

Madsen Donuts

Reviews Summary

Madsen Donuts is overwhelmingly praised for its fresh, delicious donuts, with many considering them the best they've ever had. The cream sticks, glazed, and cinnamon sugar varieties are frequently highlighted as favorites. Customers appreciate the friendly service and nostalgic charm, often willing to drive long distances despite occasional sell-outs. The small shop's limited hours (weekends outside summer) can lead to disappointment if closed, but most agree the wait is worth it. While most reviews are glowing (mostly 5-star), a few note inconsistent quality or unfriendly staff, with rare complaints about taste. The donuts' freshness, melt-in-your-mouth texture, and family-owned authenticity create a loyal following spanning generations.

I just kind of randomly stopped in to grab a coffee and ended up buying a jelly filled something because it looked alright and the place smelled good. Dang! It is is so good! If I was from this area, I'd make this a place I'd come way too often I didn't take a before pic because it only looked alright, and I didn't really expect to be too impressed, but once I realized it was delicious my hubby had already taken some large bites (he agreed - it was good!)

The wife and I did an Airbnb there a couple of years ago. We hit this donut shop, THE most amazing donuts I?ve ever had. I think I would make the 4 hour trip just to get them lol

Listen, this place lives up to the reputation! These doughnuts are fantastic. The people are super nice. Made fresh in front of you and still warm when you get them! Did I say Amazing?

When in Geneva, Madsen Donuts is a must stop. A donut shop that has been in business since 1938 is remarkable. We tried several different types of donuts and all were yummy.

First time here, but not the last. Friendly service and the Donuts are fantastic. They?ve been in business for a long time for a reason. Highly recommend

Madsen Donuts is my favorite donut place in the world. I love them so much, that I had them make red, white, and blue donuts for my wedding! They turned out beautiful, and tasted like heaven. My #1 favorite is the chocolate round, with glazed coming in close at second. Billie was great to work with and the employees are always so nice and welcoming. Highly recommend this place! 3 generations of our family have enjoyed their super delicious donuts. We drove 1400 miles to arrive today to get our fix of this delicious sugary confection. Even in todays times, we were able to get in, and pick up 2 dozen for the family get together.

Delicious donuts. ??. First time trying them while on the strip. Always closed when I?m there. Really good.

Very small shop with yummy donuts. Helpfully kind staff and not overly priced.

Best donuts in all of Ashtabula County and GOTL! You just have to try them, they taste REALLY good!

I grew up going there in the Summers when visiting Geneva on the Lake. Superb donuts! Highly recommended!

Madsen Donuts is a delightful treat on a summer?s day. Glazed sticks and rounds, glazed cinnamon stick, and raspberry filled?.so delicious. Very friendly service too?.smiles all around! ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ??

Another icon of the GOTL strip. There is usually a line out the door, but it moves quickly. Don't worry about forgetting this place. You will see many of the blue and white boxes being carried around the area. Fresh and tasty, you must get one to eat there and then some to go! They have both, raised and cake donuts, to please all tastes.

I recently visited Madsen Donuts, and I must say, it was an extraordinary experience from start to finish! The moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm smile and a delightful aroma of freshly baked donuts. The shop itself was cozy and inviting, with a charming decor that instantly made me feel at home. The variety of donuts available was impressive, from classic glazed to innovative seasonal flavors. Each donut I tried was incredibly fresh, fluffy, and delicious. The balance of sweetness was just righ

Donuts always fresh, the "cream sticks" are the bomb!...the milk pairs well, because it is ice cold. Only advice is get here early because they sell out daily and when they're gone, they're gone till the next day.

Madsen Donuts is one of the staples of the Geneva-on-the-lake strip. It?s smack in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the busy area, and there?s always a line. We went early in the morning and found it less crowded. They have a great assortment of baked goods and great coffee as well. You?d be hard pressed to walk more than 100 feet without seeing someone carrying a Madsen Donuts box. Make sure to visit if you?re in the area but try to go early!

One of the best glazed doughnuts I have ever had.

Melt in your mouth isn't just an expression here. Even the next day they were so delicious! I know my donuts, and these beat every donut I've ever had by a mile....yes, even Amish and farm donuts...it's truly not even close. Worth the hour drive for us.

Love their donuts, been coming here for years. Gotta get here early if you want cinnamon twist glazed. They always run out. Only open sat and sun out of season.

The donuts are so tender!! Love everyone of them!

Freshest most amazing donuts!!! The donuts remind me of that but they are different. Super fresh tasting! I'm a pastery nut and this place is awesome!!!

you have to get a donut while you're here. if you don't, you are truly missing out

The wife's family vacationed in Geneva on the lake Ohio when she was young, and she takes me there at least once a year. Not to vacation, but as you may have guessed, to visit Madsen donuts and grab a dozen cream sticks, aka sinkers which ate awesome. They have been an anchor there since 1938 Great donuts!

Adorable little shop that my local family raves about. Hype is 100% justified.

The best donuts along the shores of lake Erie, moving into the spot with the closing of Frosty's in Erie a couple of years ago. A must stop and try location if you're anywhere close or even just traveling by on I90. It is a cornerstone of the GOTL charm and throwback 1950's atmosphere.

First time here and hopefully not the last. Donuts were light, fresh and soooo yummy!

Half of the cream sticks were placed facedown in the box, all the chocolate came off when trying to take one out and then I had to scoop it all up and spread it on. A sprinkle donut was stacked on top of another one and all of its toppings were stuck to the lid. Donuts were good but not enough to come back for that service.

Best Donuts you'll ever /enjoy! The team working here are Always pleasant and cheerful. If you come to GOTL (Geneva On The Lake)... you Must stop and get at least a dozen of their delightful selection of donuts ?? ??. They also sell t-shirts different ones each year and other chachkies to remember them and your trip. We never miss going there numerous times on our trips. Come... partake and Enjoy! You'll regret it if you miss this treat! Take out only as small shop.

Absolutely lovely, fluffy, and light. I am in love with their donuts ?? . My favorite is the chocolate dipped donut. The number of people waiting outside this small store can speak for itself.

Small shop full of tasty donuts! Stop in a get a bag or box full? prices are good and you won?t be disappointed. A Geneva on the Lake treasure!

When did the chocolate frosting change on the cream sticks? I enjoyed it better before.

Grew up enjoying these donuts and living in Cleveland for the last 25 years, I still drive out and stop here. Fantastic!

Nice variety of donuts and they were delicious! Especially the cinnamon sticks which I highly recommend.

A must-have if you're in the area. Cheap, but so SO good.

So i have been waiting to try these donuts for almost 6 months....today i finally got here....the jelly (raspberry) donuts are. Delicious! super tender dough ..filled perfectly lightly sugar dusted .. Cinnamon sugar cake donuts are by far the best of the best i love them!! I may be sneaking out in morning to grab a few to go with my coffee .Great Donuts!!!??????

Best donuts I have eaten since the government mandated cooking oil change. Got there early and watch them frying them as I ordered. Got the glazed donuts and cream sticks tasted just like the ones we use to have as kids. Ps. If you get there early, try the cream sticks without frosting you won't be disappointed.

Always have great doughnuts. It has been a generational tradition for my family to eat here. I would absolutely recommend the cream sticks here. They're a little bit greasy, but I can't express to you how good they are. It's fried dough, so what do you expect?

Off-season in a tourist town, finding them open year round was a god send! Great home town service with a smile and delicious donuts. Will be back again .TY

as a fellow ohioan who has lived in Texas since 96...love these little sweet *heaven kisses*...especially the creme sticks or the chocolate covered...these sell like hotcakes ..and prices r still very good...def get some ..u won't regret it !!

Madsens is the only consistent thing in life. The last 2 times I was there was 1972 and 2004 and nothing has changed since then! Thank God! I went today and their donuts are the best there are. I will drive there soon even though it?s 2 1/2 hours to pick up donuts, they are that good!

Been going here since I was a young kid, 20+ years of good experiences, good service, and even better donuts. Try to come early, if they run out of donuts for the day, they close up. Every single thing I have had from here has been fresh and delicious thanks to this being a place that sticks to their roots no matter what, and would rather sell nothing at all than something subpar.

Called ahead to be sure plenty of maple cream stick donuts would be there if we came later in afternoon, assured there would be. Once we travel the distance just for the donuts, as co-workers wanted some also. We were told they don't make them until fall. NOT HAPPY. We bought choc & jelly, . Took car instead of bikes for donut safe travels back home. Open box to find blonde hair on top of donuts. Gross. Nice drive, but wasted $. Normally good donuts. Too far to go for disappointment. Girls however very ni

The donuts are simple but yummy. Wish they had more options, but they're good. My family was so happy to go since they used to go to Madsen when they were younger. My jelly filled donut was really stuffed with jelly ,which was super tasty.

The best donuts ever! I have been goin since the 1969"a and the quality has always been of a high standard! Always fresh, always delicious! It's worth the 2 and a half hour drive from McKeesport, PA to Geneva on the Lake!

These donuts definitely don't taste like they use to. Thought I would try one more time. That was my last trip there. A young gentleman waited on me and he was exceptionally courteous!!!

I gave it 2 fair shots on 2 different occasions in 2 different seasons...but they just don't make a good donut. On top of that, the staff is unfriendly. I actually THREW OUT the donuts after trying them on my second trip. They truly are terrible. My family from out of town was also sorely disappointed. We will definitely not be back again.

Madsen Donuts have been consistently fantastic as long as I can remember ? going back to my first cream stick in 1963. I still buy 2 dozen every Fall, carefully wrap and freeze them, then enjoy one cream stick every week through the cold months!

Great little donut place on the strip. Freshly made and staff is super friendly. Good prices. Just wish there was a few more options but it is a small mom and pop place so no big deal. It?s a great little shop.

Best ever. Get the creek with peanuts or glazed cinnamon sticks. My favorites. Open on weekends outside of summer except late fall early early winter.

Got there right as they opened. Super friendly and making the donuts right in front of me. I didn't want to leave.

Since 1938 this place has provided people from all around the world with amazingly delicious donuts. Made fresh there everyday. All different types. You haven't had a donut until you have been here.

What kind of donut shop don't make glazed donuts (one of the most popular). I will aways go Squire Shop in the harbor, best donuts by far. Probably why I hardly ever go to this place, never have what you want.

Drove all the way to Geneva On the Lake for Madsens donuts on a Friday .. only to find out they were closed. Very disappointing.

I've passed this place hundreds of times while bike riding down the strip in GOTL. Yesterday, I finally decided to stop in and get myself a treat. The first thing I noticed was a poor variety of donuts .. perhaps a dozen different types. Since they didn't have anything "maple" or "pumpkin", I decided on a chocolate cream filled eclair (who could mess that up?). The cost for this one (1) donut was $1.00 !!! (I can get the same donut at any other store from Walmart to Dunkin Donuts to other private diners for

Came to eat at Eddies Grill. But everything is closed up here once fall comes around. So I had donuts instead! So glad this place was opened. Donuts were tasty! There wasn't a lot of options however but enough to to choose from to satisfy non picky eaters. Thanks for being open Madisen!

Best donuts I have had in Ashtabula County so far! I cannot wait to see you guys again! The glazed donuts are so simply wonderful!

These donuts are simply THE BEST I have ever had! I grew up in Geneva and have since moved away but every summer when we come back we have to get The amazing Madsen donuts.

I've had Madsen's Donuts for several seasons. I can't say they are really good or that they are bad, they are Madsen's. They are fairly unique. The stick style donuts have a slight gultinous bite to the dough with a bit of an under cooked texture. They will sit in your stomach for a bit. They are always very fresh! The peanut topped cake style donut was fairly standard fair. You should just go for yourself. (~);}

TERRIBLE ! I was up here yesterday June 30th around 5pm . No one was making donuts ! Three teenage girls talking and giggling , doing a lot of nothing . The donuts in the case looked so OLD . All the so called glazed donuts glaze was gone off them . The sugared raised donuts were so deflated and wrinkled up ! YUCK ! So I commented that the donuts looked old not fresh . The girl informed me that they only make donuts in the morning . Wow , that's news to me , cuz I live around here and have seen them make a

I am in my 70's and have been going to "The, Lake" since I was a kid. I have also been known to make a donut run just to get Madsen's. Yesterday was my first of the season. Bit into a glazed on the way home to Cleveland and something just tasted different. The Madsen flavor wasn't there. Same with the other donuts and cream sticks. Not sure I would do another Madsen's run. Just saying.

When I was little, my grandpa would get donuts from here, every day for a week (we would spend a week at Geneva-on-Lake from the time I was a baby, until I was about 8). They were great when I was little, and they're still great!

This was our first time to Geneva-On-The-Lake (GOTL) and we were told that Madsen's was a must. We went early, about 9am, while the town was still fairly quiet. Madsen's totally did not disappoint! Their donuts are amazing, made fresh daily. The staff was extremely nice and helpful. The shop itself is small but the picnic seating right on the main street was fun, even as early as we were there! Madsen Donuts is definitely one reason why I want to come back to GOTL!

A nice little donut shop that will let you get a taste of the past. It's neat to read the historical markers in GOTL, but it's so much better to be able to experience the original shops. This is a must stop place when you visit GOTL.

Best cream sticks! Good for 80 years. So glad they're still around! Great glazed too. Worth a detour off the interstate :)

It was my first time going to Geneva and this was the only bad part. My glazed donut was all thin and dented, and falling apart. Not to mention it didn't taste that good either, my boyfriend said his cream stick was disappointing as well. Not to mention the girl at the counter (short and blonde) was rude. When we came in she said "What do you want," when we were done all she said was "bye" and walked away. Waste of $2.

Still, the best donuts in the world.

Fresh made donuts ! Best donuts we have had, what a find. Will definitely be back next time we are on vacation

I'm so happy I was told about this place. The donuts are fresh and absolutely delicious! Definitely should be a stop when you're in town!

Probably the best donuts I've ever had in any state. Get a 6 pack and go sit on the park bench down the street and look over the lake

Excellent homemade donuts, I strongly recommend stopping here if you're in the area for vacation.

Best creamsticks and my kids love their frosted donuts with sprinkles ! We wait for them to open every summer !!!! If you go to GOTL, you gotta visit Madsens !

Great donuts. Best ones I've ever had.

Always sold out, make more

Simply the best. No better way to start the day than an early morning walk from the cabin to Madsen?s for a donut and coffee. Charm + Quality. Every time.

They have the best donuts ever

We went in & bought a dozen donuts & they were so fresh! They also had a nice variety for the time of day that we went.

Wish there were more branches. The best donuts ive had but i live very far from Geneva lake ???? even my mum who hates sweets would tell me to buy her some

Best donuts in the area. Been around for a long time. Always stop when I am in town. Would reccomend.

I don't even like donuts but these blew my mind! Powdered sugar donut just melts in your mouth.. what's the secret?

Great donuts. Go early as they do sell out on some, especially cream sticks

I would never go to Geneva-on-the-Lake without a visit or two to Madson's. The doughnuts are that good. Do yourself a favor and stop in. Worry about the calories later!

Family owned and operated, A true staple of Geneva on the lake. Very well worth the wait in line which happens every morning. Gotta try the cream sticks

Madsen Donuts are awesome! Creme Sticks or Rainbow Sprinkles ? which is best? It?s hard to decide, so just have both!

Very freshly made donuts! Well worth the wait in line! Very reasonably priced! Loved!

Their donuts are the best! I especially love the cream sticks.

You've got to experience the best to know they're better than the rest! One great donut ??

One of the top reason's to go to gotl is to stop and get a donut from Madsen's. All the other reviews complaining about service, I or anyone else does not go here for the service or for the employee to be kind. We go here for the donuts"s.

Yummy fresh homemade donuts! If you're in the area be sure to grab some to take home! You won't regret it!
