Flatfish GNV (Doughnuts and Bakery)

Reviews Summary

Flatfish Donuts is overwhelmingly praised for its exceptional brioche-based donuts, described as fluffy, perfectly textured, and not overly sweet, with standout flavors like lemon curd, banana pudding, and Earl Grey. The owners are frequently highlighted as friendly and attentive, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. While primarily known for donuts, the limited savory menu—like shrimp po' boys, fried fish, and cheese grits—also receives high marks for quality and flavor. A few minor critiques mention occasional sell-outs of popular items or pricing concerns, but the consensus is clear: this is a must-visit spot for delicious, artisanal donuts and hearty comfort food in a cozy setting.

i've been coming to flatfish for some time now, and it has never disappointed! the brioche doughnuts are perfectly airy and light, contrasted by the gritty sugar they're coated in (eat the brioche with a fork to avoid sugary fingers!). they don't weigh on your stomach at all the way chain doughnuts do, and i have to physically stop myself from eating three at once. they are overfilled with perfectly sweetened cr?me?so much so that the sheer amount of cr?me in each doughnut was a taste i had to acquire, but

Fabulous, almost completely under-the-radar, fresh doughnuts place on NW 5th Avenue. Just off NW 6th Street, close to the downtown Santa Fe College area. The doughnuts are light, fluffy and delicious and there's Opus coffee. Both inside and outside seating available during open hours. Open only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 8 am to 2 pm

I stopped by Flatfish Donuts on a quiet Sunday morning around 9 AM (they open at 7:30), and even that early, the place was already buzzing and for good reason. I had my eye on their lemon-filled donut thanks to some seriously tempting photos on Instagram, but sadly, they were sold out by the time I got there. No worries though, because what I did get was nothing short of amazing. I picked up the banana pudding donut for my boyfriend and the pecan praline for myself. For my parents, I got the ?Squirrel Figh

Get here early. All they had left by 10:30 on a Saturday were three lemon curd and Devonshire-ish creme Maritozzi. I had one, which was fabulous. Great coffee, too!

consistently the best donuts and coffee i've ever had! this place turns what is normally a humble weekend breakfast into a work of art worth celebrating. must trys: dagel, salted brown butter, cardamom sugar, and the iced coffee

Honestly, I think these are the best donuts I've ever had. Both the filled and the vegan glazed (I'd never even guess they were vegan) are excellent. Not overly sweet. Good ingredients, delicious and unique flavors, perfectly cooked and prepared. I tried their catfish meal before they moved to donuts only and that was great as well. Coffee is even good and the owners are super nice. Try it out!

They only sell donuts, tea, and plain coffee. And they are AMAZING at it. ?? It's a delicious, fluffy, sweet and fried experience from the donuts. If you get one of the filled donuts you will NOT be disappointed; they are FILLED. It's also just a super chill and roomy atmosphere. A hidden gem in Gainesville. I will definitely be back.

Excellent donuts! The filling was perfection in ALL of the flavors. I tried the Earl Grey, Lemon curd, chocolate velvet, plain, lil vanilla, bananas foster, strawberry whipped, and blueberry. Most delicious! I found out they not longer do fish sandwiches or poboys. That was sad, I was hoping to grab a couple for lunch (I came in at 11am on Friday). Anyway, 10/10 love the donuts! I hope they do a fish fry day. I'd be there ordering 1 of everything ??

We sure are lucky to have this level of quality donut here in GNV ?? melt in your mouth good!! You can tell the care, quality and love that goes into them, they sell out sometimes so make sure to get there early, I?ve been waiting eagerly for the perfect day off that I could make it in and am so glad I did, brought some to my chef dad in Jacksonville as a special treat and we really loved them! It?s simply special and you?ve got to try it and share with friends!

Amazing food and service. The staff was extremely friendly and helping. I will definitely be coming back the next time I am in town!!

Doughnuts are always so good here. My personal favorites are the banana pudding, and the salted brown butter. Parking nearby can get a bit crowded, but if you're willing to park farther and walk a bit you can get there easily. I need to stress that you NEED to get here early in the morning. No later than 10AM if you want all their options available. This place sells out of their goods real fast.

Flatfish has some of the best doughnuts I've ever had. Currently, my favorites are the pecan praline brioche doughnut and the pumpkin spice vegan iced. Absolutely fantastic food, great coffee (it's Opus ;)), and a great atmosphere for those quiet mornings!

We used to drive to Jacksonville to get Good Dough donuts. These are easily on par, and a much quicker trip! Get there early, there was already a line by 8:15am.

These donuts are extremely fluffy and the filling isn?t overwhelming. The lemon curd filling is tasty and perfectly zesty but the chocolate velvet barely had flavor in my opinion. The donuts were still extremely good and you could tell the ingredients used are quality, but for the price they?re at, I can?t see myself frequenting here.

It's an amazing business with clever names that fit the best donuts I've ever put in my mouth.

We stopped by first thing in the morning after seeing their weekend flavor menu on Instagram. The place is so cute and was very clean. The service was fast and friendly! The donuts themselves were fluffy, flavorful, but not overly sweet. Great way to start the day! Highly recommend! We hope they will do the fish fry occasionally as we would love to try that next!

Luckily had a Monday off & tried out Flatfish. We both got the flounder, home fries, & hush puppies. Cute atmosphere, delicious meal. The food came out quick & super hot. Fries were so crunchy. The tartar sauce is made in house & was awesome. The owners who own the building ran Daybreak which had a super yummy breakfast. Definitely give them a try. You won?t be disappointed. Plus they have homemade cream filled donuts & cinnamon rolls which we had to get to go & both were super yummy!

wow this is probably my favorite donut!! they?re not overly sweet which is my favorite part. there?s sugar all over the actual donut and the filling has subtle flavors that don?t overwhelm you with sweetness. they?re also beautiful! the place looks really cute inside too!

The owners where so friendly! I love the vibe. It's almost a replica of the little coffee shop that used to be next to the Millhopper Leonardo's, called Corner Cup. I hope Flatfish is around for a long time! I think it would be a cute place to rent for a small imitate party.

The BEST donuts to ever grace the streets of Gville. Patty & Micheal make a great team! Absolutely anything you get here, will knock your socks off. My top 3 are the Caramel or Lemon filled brioche donuts, Passion glazed, and the Cardamom sugar!

Food is always fresh, steaming hot and delicious. Not a big place, so join a table and make some friends. Husband and wife own and operate, and they always check to be sure you love your food. Just open for lunch, but well worth the visit. I had catfish and cheese grits on this visit and it was outstanding.

Delicious sugared brioche-style donuts with light, not-too-sweet fillings. Loved the Chocolate velvet and Banana Pudding!

We got the dagel? It?s like a everything bagel flavor donut lol should try their sweet donuts

Vegan donuts are super good and weirdly cost less. Honestly don't even bother with the non-vegan ones (which are more expensive and not as good). They really need to amp up their supply though because they're constantly sold out of everything.

As a Gainesville native, for pretty much my whole life we?ve been lacking (and desperately needing) a spot like Flatfish! The breading on all of the seafood was fantastic - my husband had the po boy and it was also fabulous! I?ll be back every time I?m in town from Atlanta!

Easily some of the best donuts I've ever had! They're brioche-based, so they have more texture and a kind of chewiness compared to the donuts most people are used to.

GNV friends! Do not sleep on this place - head over to @flatfish_gnv for a delicious meal!! The team was friendly, helpful and so hospitable! If you want to #supportsmallbusiness - here is your chance!! Check out their hours and menu. We got the shrimp, flounder, greens, grits and homefries. Loved it all - beautifully seasoned. We will be back soon!! We are ?fish fry? snobs because of the awesome cooks in our family and this place hits the spot!! #eatgnv #supportlocal #fishfry

Absolutely delicious chicken hoagie. I opted for the hoagie without hot sauce but, that didn't diminish quality or aesthetic. Definitely coming back.

A business that hasn't learn how to meet there demand. Don't waste your time, there are plenty of good donuts places around that actually have donuts during their business hours.

Amazing donuts, fantastic service. The entryway is small but it opens up in the seating area.

This might sound like an exaggeration, but these might be some of the best donuts I have ever had! The fillings and icings are decadent and rich, but not overly sweet and the flavors taste real and natural. Just eating one makes me want to eat another, and then another... If you enjoy eating donuts, please stop by this place and give them a try! I really hope that one day they become as popular as Halo donuts once were ????

Some of the best donuts I have had in a long time! If they have any left make sure you grab some!!!

Fresh and delicious donuts. They also make to order and serve the Dutch Baby. We didn?t order that when we went, but we saw one served to the table next to us and it looked absolutely amazing!! Nestled in an older historic neighborhood, on street parking was plenty and the aesthetic inside was comfortable. Can?t wait to return!!

Simply the greatest doughnut I've ever had. Their dark chocolate was fantastic and the earl grey doughnut was something I never thought was possible. I love Earl grey tea and this was amazing. Their shop is cozy and have a small selection of books that you're invited to use, including the Zelda encyclopedia, parking is available in front of the store, Easily the best.

Best donuts I've ever had in Florida. Do it. You'll be glad you did.

Make sure to buy ALL the monkey buns. They are delicious!!

This was a super cool hole in the call that lived up to the hype! I ordered the fried grouper with cheese grits. The hush puppies were incredible and the rest of the meal was splendid as well. The breading does tend to flake off a lot but it's not too much of an issue. I loved my experience and recommend to anyone.

Just happened to walk by and saw the sign, came back the next day for lunch. They were so friendly and helped sort out all our options of fish, sides, and sauces. We got fried catfish, slaw, hush puppies, and grits. Everything was fresh and delicious. We got some of their house-made donuts for later and they were phenomenal. Overall, fantastic spot! 10/10 would eat again.

Every. Single. Thing. is so tasty here! My new favorite lunch spot. From the shrimp to the flounder to the hush puppies to the cheesy grits, everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The sauces are stellar. High quality and obviously a labor of love. Do not miss out!!!

Great local spot with an excellent lunch deal. Love their food! The couple who own the shop are gems too.

Delicious. Hole in the wall. First time. Will be back for A dagel

Not open during advertised hours, no sign as to why, computer out on table in locked building, no donuts visible. I did not take any stars because the point is not to ruin the rating but rather to make people aware. It is basic business to be open posted hours and just common courtesy to customers. Fortunately my reigning favorite Gainesville donut place is just down the road.

Taste great. I only really need two donuts to knock out my donut craving versus 4 + of another place. Get there early if you want to make sure to have all options available.

Phenomenal food! We had the flounder with shrimps, all the seafood was so fresh and fried to perfection. Do yourself a favor and head there right now! Don't forget to grab a light and fluffy donut, so good!

I rarely eat out, having a desire to eat good quality food. I saw the Flatfish menu at a friend?s office and asked about it. Based on his recommendation, I was excited to try it out. My meal was so good. I had the fried Tempeh with an additional side. The tempeh, red beans with rice and collards were perfect as well as the hush puppies. All perfectly seasoned. Some of the tempeh went home in a to go container, the meal was so satisfying. Took home some of the fresh chocolate chip cookies with walnuts. It wa

food was not only fresh but came out fast! some of the best grits and fried shrimp i?ve ever had. the amount you can get for $12 is worth it and the atmosphere is so cute and homey. one of the best new restaurants in gainesville!

Donuts are homemade and TASTY with unique flavors you can?t find in elsewhere. The owners are a super sweet married couple who KNOW how to cultivate a local business.

A month ago we had the best fried shrimp at this place that we have ever had in gainesville. Yesterday we returned to get more of those delicious lunch sandwiches and were so disappointed to find that the restaurant has switched from seafood to donuts. I'm an old guy pushing seventy five and have lived here my whole life. Tom petty was a year ahead of me at g h s and we sang in the chorus together. When we want really good shrimp, We drive to saint augustine and go to Osteens. Their shrimp is so good that y

It would be nice if they were open during listed business hours. Passed around a menu and took a group order from my office only to show up at the location to find that they AGAIN closed early. Apparently, while I was getting out of my car they closed as the door was propped open when I pulled in... It just may be nice to just change the hours of operation. We tried to phone in the order but got the voicemail. I wouldn't bother to make mention of it if this was the 1st time, but it continues to happen. I tr

We were in Gainesville FL for a few hours and we wanted to find a place off the beaten path. I pulled up local restaurants on MAPS and Flat Fish GNV came up and we found it. It's a very friendly and welcoming family restaurant. The food was excellent and the Pickles that was on the sandwiches were the best sandwiche pickles I've ever had. We highly recommend Flat Fish GNV.

Absolutely delicious. Best donuts I have ever had

Cute little new restaurant with excellent, southern home cooking. Service was attentive and very friendly and the food came out quickly with no mistakes! It came out so fast it was actually too hot to eat at first. So we sipped on our excellent sweet tea until we could. Don?t overlook this new place.

Flatfish knows how to fry. Cargish was good and the chicken hoagie was tasty too. Would like some smoked ham hocks in the collards but understand why they don't add the. Cheese grits and hish puppies are really good too. Gotta go on Saturdays to guarantee they have donuts which are incredible.

Delicious, fast, and reasonably priced. I had the fried tempeh with hush puppies and slaw. Everything was great but the slaw was a real standout! I would totally buy a tub of it and eat it with everything. Will definitely be back!

Incredible shrimp po boy! One of the best I?ve had outside of nola

Best donuts in town by far! Patty and Mike are awesome hosts. The vibe is super chill and classic Gainesville!

I tried the chocolate velvet donut and it was absolutely AMAZING!!! Best donut I?ve ever had. Definitely will be going back to try more.

One of those places in which you really can?t go wrong, if you?re not sure, just go and have great donuts!

The owners are lovely people and their food is great! Plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, too. The breaded tofu po? boy is probably my favorite!

Best donuts I have eaten in my life!

The food was absolutely delicious, and the quaint atmosphere made it feel like we were eating in someone's home. I can't wait to go back and enjoy it again!

What a gem. Fish tastes fresh and is fried to perfection, hush puppies were perfect and sides were all good too. They even have vegetarian options.

One of the best places to eat in town. This place knows what it?s about and it does it extremely well. Everything on their small menu is made with care and is absolutely delicious

Little cozy spot with delicious fresh donuts

This is some of the best food in town! And the owners/operators could not be nicer! They deserve lots of business - get over there!

Great doughnuts! We had the caramel swirl and lemon curd doughnuts, will be coming back for more!

Quaint restaurant in old downtown Gainesville. Food was excellent and the service will keep me coming back. This will not be our last visit.

Awesome doughnuts!!!

I got the pina colada and banna cream and they were just perfect.

Great neighborhood spot with fresh-fried fish and comfort food sides! Chill interior with fun music too

Super cute place, the early grey donut was insane!!

A nice spot with delicious food! Just a few blocks outside of downtown!

Destroy all in your path to get to Flatfish. Seriously delicious food and great people.

Don't walk....RUN to eat at Flat Fish, everything was delicious!!!

Pretty good place. Will come back.

The donuts are amazing!
