These are some amazing potato based donuts. There is a distinct textural difference from flour donuts. These are airy but has a slightly denser chew and crisper exterior. That crunch is fantastic!!! What i also like is that these unique flavor combinations are not super sweet and stays true to their namesake. Such as the viet coffee donut is coffee taste!! All these donuts were excellent!! I will need to try their savory breakfast sandwiches next time. Kudos to the friendly staff!! The place, thoug
Stopped in at downstate donuts with my two boys and they absolutely loved it. The donuts were massive so 2 donuts for one grown-up and two six-year-olds. Easy to sit inside and have a doughnut and a cup of coffee while they enjoy it. decent parking out on the street. Would definitely come back if I was in the neighborhood.
It?s National Doughnut Day 2025, and I felt a deep responsibility to celebrate this especially important holiday. Downstate was the closest option with solid reviews, and I liked that they use potato and organic ingredients. I try to eat healthy, but only if healthy also happens to be the most delicious option. I showed up around 11 a.m. and quickly realized I was late to the doughnut party. They had already sold out of several flavors and, sadly, their National Doughnut Day promo which featured their sign
First ever potato donuts and they were amazing. These were the fluffiest and lightest donuts I?ve ever had. They also weren?t overly sweet which was nice. The vanilla sour cream was a regular potato base while the brown sugar waffle was a sweet potato base. The only downside was that the brown sugar wasn?t that noticeable. I can?t wait to try some of their other flavors especially anything chocolate, but at the end of the day you can?t really make donuts any better than these.
Downstate Donuts is amazing! We have been frequent customers, and decided to cater our wedding dessert (donuts) from them. Leo and the Downstate team were extremely helpful, kind, and made the most delicious donuts for our special day. All of our guests loved them and kept asking where the donuts were from! Highly recommend them for a delicious treat!
Downstate Donuts already slays with their donuts, but recently they introduced breakfast sandwiches. I tried ?The Garden? for the first time this morning, and ran to Google to write this review. It was insane - the fluffy egg, the fresh veggies, the size! I?m lucky enough to live around the corner but if you don?t, I promise you this spot is a destination worthy of a special trip
The goal of a review is to take a picture of the item before you eat...but THIS donut (Brown butter chai) was screaming my name! Oh it was so good! Way better than its commercial competitors! Downstate donuts came to my apartment building and I'm so glad they did! Most of us had never heard of them, but ALL of us was trying to see how can we purchase a dozen ?? immediately! This is definitely a must try and it's gluten free!
Best donuts I?ve ever had in my life. So so good. Moist, perfect flavors. Obsessed. Cute shop and nice staff!
Downstate Donuts is a must-visit for any donut lover seeking unique flavors. From the indulgent Chocolate Sea Salt to the crunchy Pistachio and Carrot Cake, each is a masterpiece. Despite my early flight schedule, I couldn't resist returning before the end of my trip to explore more flavors. The savory-sweet Miso Glaze and Japanese Pancake Donuts were my favorites, with the Kyoto-style cold brew coffee perfectly complementing the experience. Whether you're a local or just passing through, make sure to stop
Best donuts in Uptown! These are so light but crispy and chewy and sooo delicious, they are hard to describe. They aren't cheap, but so worth it. The miso honey and lemon ricotta are my current favorites, they aren't too sweet or overwhelming with their flavors and the texture is really 10/10. The coffee is also good and the service is always so welcoming and wonderful. Love this shop!
Had to try it. Donuts made from basically mashed potatoes. They were fluffy and very good. Interesting flavors as well. Coffee was very good as well????
The Donut Dinosaur and Coffee Crocodile tried the potato donuts and they were delicious! Great cold brew as well in a cozy shop with great service. Tried the chocolate and cinnamon with a split decision on which was better.
Since my hubby is training to he a big back we eat donuts. This might be the best donut I have ever eaten. 5/5.
Absolutely adored the uniquely flavored donuts! A clean and tidy shop provided a comfortable environment for dessert or even a little bit of work. The German chocolate donut was super tasty with its generous almond crumbles and complex chewing profile. Will definitely be back!
Downstate Donuts (#141) 1132 W Wilson Ave Another Uptown gem! Super fresh donuts made from potatoes. Who knew? Delicious! Heard they sellout every day so got here early and there were plenty. My Vietnamese coffee was brewed up just for me (?That?ll take ~5 minutes ? is that ok??) so it was also super fresh and bold. Painted white brick walls, slate floor, indie/pop music, patio style tables/chairs, and lots of plants enjoying the bright sunshine streaming through floor-to-ceiling street corner windows.
I love their donuts and I eat only the chocolate one. With the packaging problem I read from other people?s review, I would like to share my experience too, about the packaging. My case is the chocolate flavor I love was not well received by the packaging they have, which?s disappointing? With the sauce on top of the donuts, it?s the highlight of your unique flavor. But your paper thin bag you have could easily just damage your delivery of the flavors in all directions and you could already have many commen
Delicious donuts! I went with my boyfriend who has celiac disease (gluten free) and we had a great experience. There were only 2 gluten free flavors when we went (which was sad because more were listed on their website). I got a (non-GF) seasonal peanut butter chocolate donut which was a perfect balance of flavors - can't wait to go back and try more of their flavors!
Downstate Donuts is easily the best donut in Chicago. The flavors always taste amazing and they have very innovative ingredient combinations. The donuts are soft, airy, and have a light richness that's perfectly balanced. It's a superior recipe with premium ingredients; I'd never recommend another donut first. The service is always professional and personable, and the atmosphere is very pleasant, has nice interior with tons of window lighting - the French would come back for seconds.
Cozy, pleasant atmosphere. Food made from potatoes so delicious that I felt guilty eating. I couldn?t believe it actually was not bad for me. I could very easily over indulge.
Best donuts in the city. Not particularly close either. Got a dozen to try all 10 flavors and they were all incredible. Fantastic customer service as well.
By far the best donuts I?ve had! Got half a dozen to take and share with friends on the lake. The blueberry lemon is my fav but honestly, it?s hard to choose. Definitely recommend stopping in. They are the best paired with a cold brew on a hot day. Also, their gluten-free donuts are the best around.
I'm so glad we got a hankering for donuts and ventured down(state)! Heavenly textures and great flavors. The staff was so friendly, and the shop is very cute. The lemon pistachio donut and Vietnamese coffee were my favorites that I'll be coming back for.
service wonderful they even turned down window blinds and gave me table service that morning my first time there when I had 2 Vietnamese iced coffees, breakfast sandwich bigger than my hands could hold and 2 sourdough doughnuts which I gave to people so I can't comment on that yet but will be back! update: HAD to try the donut finally! So scrumptious I ate it before my sandwich with spring lettuce, cheddar cheese, tomato, generous helpings of avocado and perfectly done fried egg and coffee with oatmilk wh
I work just a few doors down from this amazing donut shop, but I hadn?t had the chance to try them until today. The donuts were absolutely delicious, and I ordered the Garden breakfast sandwich. It was a generous portion and reasonably priced. The coffee was brewed to perfection.
Maybe not the best donuts in the city, but one of the top options. Well above the Chicago chains Stan's or Do-Rite. Vietnamese coffee is made to order and very rich. The gluten free donuts are some of the best I have ever had and almost indistinguishable from the regular ones which is hard to pull off if you've ever had gluten free food before.
Hands down the best donut I have ever had. I found out about them because The Gallery Cafe serves their donuts on weekends. Will definitely be checking this place out in person as soon as I can!
awesome donuts. light, fluffy, & delicious. iced vietnamese coffee was excellent too. can't wait to go back.
Came here for donuts, MANNNNN donuts were amazing, I had the Japanese pancake donut, vanilla sour cream and the most impressive was the banana nut Carmel, just like eating a slice of banana nut bread w glaze on top, GAME CHANGER, I would definitely go back..
These are hands down the best donuts I?ve ever had! I didn?t even realize/taste they were made with potatoes until later. Both times I?ve gone, the donuts are fresh and slightly warm, so good. They are constantly changing their flavors so I?m looking forwarding to my next visit. They don?t have a bathroom which is kind of a bummer.
Omg! They have the best donuts! I have tried every donut shop in Chicago and this place is top tier for me. The potatoes it's made with brings this donut to a whole new level. I highly recommend them.
Little island of serenity in a busy area. The potato donuts are moist & tasty. Excellent coffee. It's so pleasant inside. Say, "for here!"
The donuts are delicious. The donuts were delicate and gently dissolve on the tongue, which makes them unique and stand out against their competitors if there are any. The staff were kind and patient and genuinely interested in the customer experience.
Potato-based donuts! Can?t wait to take my vegan friends here. It?s a cute little shop and the donuts are delicious. I got the Cinnamon Crumble. ??
Delicious donuts, we tried an assortment of flavors. Light fluffy texture, deliciously sweet icing that wasn't too sweet. We'd get donuts from here again before going anywhere else. Highly recommended!
My first visit. I had the Chocolate Sea Salt doughnut. The texture was interesting, as potato-made doughnuts have a different chew than traditional yeast-raised. The glaze was pretty good and not cloyingly sweet, although I'm not really into the "salted" trend. I also bought an Apple Cider and Vanilla Sour Cream doughnut, but I'll eat them tomorrow. Hopefully, they'll hold up better than Dunkin, which gets rock-hard after a day. They also serve Passion House coffee, a local roaster. Overall, while good tast
Best doughnuts ever!! Love honey miso and the fluffiness. The service was great and the atmosphere is relaxing.
Such a pleasant little place. They had 9 flavors when I went and it was so hard to choose! The donut I got was delectably moist. Very chipper staff too!
Happy that Downstate was open on Wed morning! Before we left to drive home to NJ, I stopped in for coffee and wanted the lemon ricotta donut, but it wasn?t available. ?? So I ordered coffee and chose the cinnamon crumb. Wow! It was the best! The young person behind the counter was so sweet and pleasant, service was great! Can?t wait ?til my next trip to Chicago. ??
I am a community resource provider and part of my job is to go into a lot of businesses. Rarely do I meet individuals as friendly as at this establishment. I spoke with James who was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the business and their products. After going in for work, I came back and got a doughnut which James recommended. It may have been the best donut I?ve ever had in my life so thank you James and thank you downstate donuts for an awesome experience.
I am a donut snob and this was amongst the BESTS DONUTS IV'E EVER HAD! Every bite was euphoric. Perfect blend of sweetness with a gooey (not overboard) cakey texture. OMG...out of this world delicious.
Was greeted by the absolute kindest and bubbliest people behind the counter! Then came the donuts and I realized I was experiencing a life changing moment. All of their donuts are the best donuts I?ve ever had. Particular standouts for me were the Vanilla Sour Cream (which had a density that all donut shops should aspire to) and the Japanese Pancake (how they got that pancake flavor in there without sacrificing density or texture is beyond me). Great spot, great atmosphere, will absolutely recommend this pl
First time trying Vietnamese coffee. Fantastic!! The donuts are soft and airy and again Fantastic!! I will be back.
Parking can be hard to find and can imagine being busy at times. Donut selection was good for time of day was there. Also had Vietnamese coffee.
Insanely good donuts. Never had a potato donut before but i love it. Great texture and some really nice flavors for fall. Vietnamese iced coffee was good too. A little pricy but a worthwhile treat
Potato donuts are so delicious! It's great to have the owner bringing something tasty to the community!
My first time there with a friend. The donuts are impeccable. If you're north check em out!
These are by far the best donuts I?ve had in the city! The donuts are perfectly caked, fluffy, and sweet without overdoing it. I had the honey butter which was my favorite and the Japanese pancake which came with a tart berry jam topping. Also had the Vietnamese ice coffee, which a as someone who?s not a coffee fan I truly enjoyed and would order again.
I love this place and it deserves all the praise. The doughnuts have an amazing flavor and texture, it?s like biting into a slightly crispy pillow. They have awesome flavors and creations and I love their creative names too. My favorite is the Vietnamese coffee flavored donut! The staff is super knowledgeable and friendly every time I have been there. It?s another great add to the neighborhood over the last year or so and super happy to have this place instead of more commercialized donuts. Don?t skip
Definitely one of the amazing local treasures of Uptown. My boyfriend and I come here almost every weekend to enjoy the delicious rotating variety of donuts, as well as their recently added savory breakfast tamales, and always love what we get. The staff is friendly and hard working and we love to dine in once in a while when the sun is out to soak in the chill cafe atmosphere. We definitely recommend it! We bring friends and out-of-towners here whenever we get the chance! Support a local and unique busines
Not a fan. We tried the lemon ricotta and the maple sweet potato. Both of them tasted like pure sugar. No citrus, ricotta or sweet potato detected at all, with just a hint of maple. In addition, they weren?t crispy which is my expectation when eating a good donut. I know it?s a popular spot but it?s not for me.
Absolutely delicious donuts, a great selection of flavors and styles. The staff are friendly and the shop is an inviting, modern and cozy space to enjoy their donuts. Always satisfied and happy after I go here. Downstate donuts are great!
By far the best donuts and the best vietnamese coffee i?ve had. I have been a regular with this store and I have tried almost every flavor that they would release every week? and by far, they have never let me down. The donuts are just incredible! My personal favorites are the Cinnamon Crumble (love cinnamon), brown sugar waffle and brown butter chai. Take note, they sell out early so you have to come in early.
They use King Arthur?s flour (high quality stuff) and have sweet potato donuts. Their breakfast tamales were also an outstanding surprise. These might be my favorite donuts in Chicago!
The most delicious donuts, so moist, with an awesome variety of flavors. They often feel so simple yet so decadent. The customer service is fantastic. Placed a catering order with them and the process was so smooth. They delivered on time and ensured I got exactly what I wanted. Whether you?re looking for a quick treat, or something to bring to the office, this place is a perfect place to stop.
Great donut shop! They have gluten-free donuts, and what I like about them is that they aren't overly sweet, which is hard to find with GF baked goods. The person at the front desk is also extremely nice!
I?m happy this donut shop exists in my neighborhood! Staff is always friendly and most donuts you can never go wrong with. They do rotate a lot of their donut selection and sometimes I don?t get to get some of the ones I?ve enjoyed previously, but that?s okay. Donuts are a little pricey, but they are big and I feel less guilty about eating them here compared to other donut shops! I love the potato-based idea/concept!
Some of the bast donuts I've ever had! Incredible! ??
We tried every single one and I am so glad we did! The maple one and carrot cake are amazing. Probably some of the best melt in your mouth donuts I?ve ever had!!! Excited to come back for new flavors. Hopefully there?s chocolate dough coming up soon!
Best donut I have ever tasted! Being at the beach yesterday, I was able to try one and it was delicious! The gentleman serving them(for free on a hot beach) was super friendly and you could tell he was proud to serve them. Thank You!!
Super friendly and super delicious! We rolled into town on Sunday right around closing so the selection was small but the flavor was BIG. Unique texture and perfect amount of sweetness! Definitely will be back!
There was a donut stand in the lobby at the office building and I tried it. She only had pistachio and it was cake donut. I'm not a cake donut person, but WHOA!! This was delicious. It was so airy and light and yummy. I couldn't remember the name and luckily I found it on my CC receipt!!! I must go get more. No time for a picture
I?m so glad this place opened up. The owners and staff are super friendly and these donuts are incredible! I come here multiple times a week and never leave disappointed.
My first ever time trying a donut made with potato! Owner took my order and was very kind and willing to answer my questions. I was only able to try the Miso Honey Butter doughnut, but it definitely made me a fan! The texture is reminiscent of mochi without gumminess. It has the puffy, airy, light feel of a yeast donut, but the bite and crumb texture of a cake donut. It was very incredibly soft, despite ordering it at almost 1pm. It was a bit too sweet for my taste, but that's nothing the accompaniment
My favorite donuts in Chicago! The staff is so nice and friendly, and the shop is adorable. My husband and I love the Japanese Pancake especially, but all of the flavors are so creative! The texture is incredible as well. Love that they have Vietnamese Iced Coffee too!
Tasty potato-flour donuts (get 'em while they last!) and coffee with friendly counter staff. A great addition to Uptown.
I don't understand the hype. These are kind of bad donuts, I would rather eat Stan's or even Dunkn. They are dense and two of the three we had were improperly fried and drained so the bottom was soggy. The miso donut was Krispy Kreme levels of sweet with no hint of miso saltiness. The coffee donut was particularly claggy, though the icing was tasty. Lastly the new blueberry lemon had the best texture but not really hitting any but the faintest blueberry flavor. Get down to Beacon for way better donuts
I?ve been here twice and each time the service was really great. Both baristas were very friendly. The Vietnamese coffee is consistently great and the donut was amazing. So soft and delicious, it almost melted in your mouth.
Some of the most delicious donuts I?ve had in Chicago! WOWOW
The donuts while being very tasty, kinda wish that the flavors were a little more intense. Ended up getting an assorted dozen out of excitement. After trying a bite from a few different ones, they started to taste mostly sweet and less distinct.
I was walking to work this morning and there was a girl selling these donuts on a bicycle at the Green City West Loop farmers market. I stopped and bought two bags of the Donut Tots (vanilla sour cream and a miso butter flavor). They looked pretty good and I wanted to support a local small business. When I opened both bags and tried them at work, disappointment is an understatement. They were dreadful. Maybe they were bagged when they were still warm but they were so soggy, wet, and almost melted together i
Friendly staff and quality products. The Caramel Cafe Du Monde coffee is great.
Delicious donuts! Great variety of flavors and they have a great fluffy, moist texture. Very helpful staff helping us chose donuts. They sell out later in the day so make sure to come early.
Texture-wise, these are very excellent donuts. The velvety-soft, almost pillowy mainframe is really what shines with somewhat promising, yet dull flavors. They sound great, such as the mango with sticky rice and Japanese pancake, but the flavors are barely there. I want to taste the actual flavors on the donut I?m purchasing, especially for a premium price. Bring Filipino, I was excited for the mango and sticky rice. It was about two circles of mango drizzle and individual grains of sticky rice. It wo
Moved to uptown and found this wonderful Donut shop. With amazing people and Donut's. Also The Garden Sandwich is delicious ??. I recommend the Sour Cream Donut as well.?
I love the donuts being potato donuts they don't feel heavy at all and they always have a nice selection, I have never had anything I didn't like. Anyone employees I dealt with have been great.
Great donuts just how I like them! Tried four flavors and loved the lemon one the best but all were fantastic. So happy to have fresh donuts with interesting flavours in the neighborhood that aren?t monstrous in size!
I was excited to try this new-to-me donut shop. Everything looked great and the woman behind the counter was polite and helpful. I only had Cash on me and was told they could accept cash but they could make no change, which is illegal in the state of Illinois. I did not buy a donut and don't plan to patron there going forward.
Don't bother going if you don't live nearby, it's never guaranteed that you will get donuts. Easily the best donut I've ever had, but out of the handful of times I've been over the past two months I've only been able to get donuts once. Everytime, I come here they are either sold out or they are closed (2pm is too early). They don't respond well to messages and I don't understand the point of having a closing time if they are going to close the store when donuts are sold out instead of making more until clo
Difficult to get to if you aren?t from the city itself and they are not very responsive to messages on social media or email. Their website also says gluten free donuts are returning the summer of 2023. Since we are in August, this implies that they should be available but I was told when I arrive that they are not; this was quite disappointing after traveling over an hour for what they claim is ? best non-baked gluten free donut you've ever?.
So glad, and cursed (for my waistline), this is in my neighborhood. Great great donuts - light / fluffy, not overly sweet, and seasonal flavors... Friendly service too. Just have to get there early, so popular they run out! Was lucky enough to get a chocolate salted one while still warm...??
Spectacular give me 14 of ?em right now. Excellent donuts, incredible quality and fun flavors. Great service can?t wait to visit again!
I absolutely love the Miso butter donut! The donut was so soft and buttery to me that I would not have known that it was made from potatoes. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. The only thing that I didn't like was that they didn't have the Lemon mascarpone, blueberry lemon or banana nut caramel donuts that I so desperately wanted to try.
Yummy, fresh donuts every morning! This isn?t Dunkin?, so come with high expectations. The staff is sooo friendly, and the coffee is great.
Oh boy what a find. These donuts are to die for. I needed something to bring to my friend?s house and found these guys in the area. I got half a dozen of their glazed donuts. At first we cut one in half just to try but quickly realized it will be really hard not to eat more. I?m not a big donut eater but this is definitely a place if I ever feel like having a donut out of this world.
Cute store super friendly. I'd want to come back and give it another go. Tried the vanilla sour cream and cinnamon crumble. Maybe it was too close to end of day. I know there's a strong following and they are great to see in the neighborhood.
This is the best donut I've ever had! And I eat donuts! They're moist, just the right amount of sweet, and even the coffee was good. Which most places DD, Stan's, Starbucks coffee is awful! Definitely try this place, you'll thank me. I had the vanilla sour cream.??
Flavors on website are not offered daily. So don?t get your hopes up until you arrive. The way they package the donuts sucks. They use little bags so the toppings stick to the bag. I found all four of my donut to be oily. Man working this morning could have used another cup of coffee. I won?t be going back.
The flavors were great, if not a bit monotonous (at least 4 varieties of chocolate that weren?t very different from each other). The big issue was grease. I hate to describe it this way, but a few of the donuts were almost juicy with oil. I?ll give it to them that I came in a few hours before close v. right after opening, but it was pretty gross. Solid flavors, though.
