10/10 don?t leave Balboa without having a frozen banana. Not only did this specific shop have frozen bananas they also had ice cream and delicious donuts!!! Everything we had was so good. I would definitely come back again.
First time here. Ordered plain cake and sugar raised. Neither particularly good or bad, just average. I got there first thing in the morning 6:30am, thinking will get first batch, however they had 4 of this, 5 of that thinking, these can?t be fresh since they just opened so possibly day old donuts. They looked and tasted like it. Asked if fresh, and of course was told, ?yes, we made them last night.? LOL! Oh man, that?s the perfect answer from a couple who probably don?t eat junk food like donuts. Not worth
I ordered a frozen banana with chopped nuts. It was very tasty. I tried a couple of the cookies. They were quite average.
The Oreo flavor is a delicious mix of Oreos and sweet, creamy banana. The banana isn?t too overpowering?it blends smoothly with the Oreo crumbles, making it a unique and refreshing twist. It?s perfect for me because I love a balance of something sweet and fruity together for dessert.
This is such a fun place to grab a treat with friends. I got the cinnamon dipped banana, and it was okay. If I were to go back I would get chocolate, or add on some more toppings. My friend got icecream and she thought it was super good. Grab a treat and walk the shops
Excellent Balboa bars and frozen bananas! Definitely a favorite when on Balboa Island now. Friendly and helpful staff and seating out front. We enjoyed our bars while walking around the island. Makes for a special visit anytime! Absolutely recommend
First time visit nice experience, if you like bananas they have lots of options plus regular ice cream and more
The Balboa Peninsula is a neighborhood of the city of Newport Beach, Orange County, California. This community has been the home to, Lauren Bacall, James Cagney, Joey Bishop, Humphrey Bogart, George Burns, Buddy Ebsen, Shirley Temple and John Wayne. Some very famous people I would say. In the heart of Balboa, is Dads Donut & Bakery Shop. It stands as a beacon of delight, drawing both locals and tourists alike with its irresistible charm and delectable treats. What truly sets Dad's Donut & Bakery Shop apart,
I wish they had a place near where I live. The Balboa bar is the best! Nice big thick chunk of vanilla ice cream dipped in yummy chocolate then topping of your choice, I opted chopped roasted almonds. So dang good. You can pick a frozen banana too and size, the large is so big! Do it, go there!
When at the Balboa Island you will see people walking around eating the frozen banana with different flavors. There are multiple shops selling frozen bananas. We saw good reviews for Dad's Donut and decided to eat here. The service was good and fast but a frozen banana was just not our thing. It was just a full frozen banana dipped in Oreos. Outside was just crushed Oreos and after you eat the covering then it is hard to eat a frozen banana.
My favourite spot was closed for whatever reason so I came here instead.Had the vanilla cone and chocolate covered banana with chocolate sprinkles. The staff is super friendly. I like that you can buy lottery here + they have thrift ice cream so there's that.
Won?t be back. Just by looking at them, I could tell the sprinkles had been sitting there a looooong time. I don?t think anything here is fresh. Wouldn?t recommend. Sugar & Spice a couple stores away seems way cleaner.
We are here mid October and so happy that they have more than cold treats. Though I have had their frozen bananas and balboa bars, and they're amazing too! We got cookies, donuts, and ice cream today!
We went here after we tried buying at the other place down the street. The other place didn?t take cash so we came here. Better service, bigger proportions, and they taken American currency. Wow look at that you now earned our family?s business. Thank you for the polite service.
They say there is always money in the banana stand, and you know what else is there? Delicious frozen bananas! This place will not disappoint if looking for an authentic Balboa delicacy. Very fast service and room to sit outside and enjoy while people watching. Lots of options for toppings also. Highly recommend!
This is a landmark? we?ve been coming here for years!!! 28 to be exact!!! The absolute freshest bakery you will ever encounter. Spotless!! The hippo cookies are legendary!!! People and places come and go but I?m so thankful that this place is here to stay!!! It just takes me back when things were simple.
Quaint little donut and ice-cream shop just after the bridge to Balboa island known for its frozen Bananas. As much as you think you should try this local 'delicacy', I'd have to say it was tremendously underwhelming to have an indigestible rock solid fruit served to you by the most disagreeable of staff.
I?ve been coming here ever since I was a kid and it remains unchanged and amazing. I strongly recommend the vanilla balboa bar, dipped in chocolate, with everything as a topping.
Always a favorite when on Balboa Island. Friendly and helpful staff and seating out front. We enjoyed our bars while walking around the island. Makes for a special visit anytime.
Dessert is my favorite meal of the day! Dad's Donut & Bakery is must go spot on Balboa island. They have giant chocolate chip cookies and delicious doughnuts.
We love coming to Balboa Island to walk around and have a relaxing time. We couldn't so that without getting a world famous Balboa bar. They have so many different topings it can be hard to decide but ultimately I go with the rainbow sprinkles. My favorite part is the way the chocolate crumbles off as you eat it and then you get chocolate chunks to eat after.
Awesome place! I had the everything frozen banana. It was great. Lots of history in this place.
Cute little shop serves ice cream, donuts ??, frozen bananas ?? and even scratcher tickets if you're feeling lucky. #LocalGuides
I was in town for a conference so I was strolling around after dinner by myself and was intrigued by the window. I got a small banana with all the toppings and it was surprisingly delicious! I realized later Sugar N Spice was really the place to go but this place really hit the spot and is nothing like what we have back home in the Bay Area.
The famous for their frozen banana. I think it's something you got to try and it's delicious and very well priced
It's a Donut, Bakery and Ice Creams & Frozen Banana! No seats, Walk in order at the counter
A MUST VISIT in Balboa Island for the original frozen banana, hippo cookie, and applesauce cake donuts! Great snacks, and always friendly staff!
Best long john, and bear claw, amazing, delightful and decadent. You can feel and see the thought out quality and carefulness of the bakery in their doughnuts.
Dad?s Donuts has the best soft serve ice cream I have ever tried. 10/10 would recommend!
A pretty cheap and easy treat for walking the streets of Balboa Island. The fact that you know you'er eating something iconic just makes the rest of what you're doing seem that much more special.
Service and the frozen banana were both great.
Would give zero stars. We got 2 frozen bananas and a hippo cookie. Got back to the car and one of the bananas had a hair sticking out of the side of it! Totally grossed us out so took it all back for a full refund and the rude lady got mad at us! Told us if we take the refund to never come back! Lady do you think we're going to rush back or make it a habit to return hair food and ask for refunds??? Goodness!
Just a mediocre place to stop for a treat. The donuts were pretty good and tasted fresh. The banana was unique, but nothing amazing. Also felt a bit overwhelming & chaotic when first entering with ice cream on both sides, donuts, bananas, and I never saw the Balboa bars. It would be nice if it was more clear on how & what to order.
The hippo cookie used to be my favorite cookie in the world. So much so, that I had them at my wedding. I bought a dozen today and they were horrible. They used to be thick and soft and now they are thin, crumbly and seems like the bakery is cutting corners, unfortunately. Hippo cookies went from being my favorite for 25 years to very unlikely I will buy them again. I?m so sad and disappointed. Not sure when they changed their recipe, but sending a farewell to the old hippo cookies. ????
It?s a great spot to grab a sweet treat! I love their balboa bars!
At this place, I had the Balboa Bar for the first time. I wasn?t 100% sure that it was going to be good, but it was the best ice cream bar I?d ever had! And trust me- I?m a kid so I know my ice cream??. Anyway, the service was just as good as the bar itself. The toppings for the bar were good, and the rest of my family seemed to love the double chocolate ice cream. Amazing place for a nice dessert!
Fantastic customer service! They?ve been super nice and friendly.
Staff: The staff is super kind and helpful and will always try their best to help you out even when busy. Donuts: Their donuts are amazing. I sometimes stop there getting donuts before heading to work. My favorite is the bear claw and the jelly filled donuts. Really yummy. They also have cookies (sugar cookies) shaped like cute hippos. Ice cream: I still have yet to try their frozen banana but they have a nice variety of ice cream flavors. My cousin and I got green tea flavor and it was delicious. Overal
We come here every time we are on Balboa Island. Wonderful Balboa Bars ( dipped ice cream on a stick rolled in sprinkles or nuts or crushed candy) plus shave ice or ice cream cones in addition to cookies and donuts. The owners are friendly and kind.
Visited Newport Beach from Las Vegas and this was one of our stops. The donuts were very delicious, fresh, and soft. I had the cinnamon crumble twist in the morning and stopped by again at night for another. My kids loved the donuts also. I took a star off because on our second trip, the hot chocolate was less than stellar. It was very bland. The staff was friendly, though.
Being the fun uncle that I am, I snuck in here really fast to grab my young nephews some treats. Was not disappointed. Complete with donuts, ice cream, frozen bananas of all kinds, cookies, pastries, and can go on and on. It actually made it hard to decide! Needless to say I just went with some classic donuts. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Checking out was a breeze. Good vibes all around. Great atmosphere in this swanky classic place. I was in and out before I knew it and casually snuck back
About what you would expect for overpriced ice cream and treats in a popular tourist trap. The treats were good enough, and the best part was probably the cute husband and wife combo serving up the sweets. Who knows of this or the other frozen banana shop is the original one, not me!
Banana?s were not good. Plenty of fat. Workers. Not friendly.
Want a famous Balboa ice cream bar? This is the place to get it. One of my favorite summer desserts will always be this Balboa Bar! It?s a classic ?must try? if you?re visiting the island!
Get the Balboa Bar Cheesecake dipped in chocolate and rolled in Butter Brickle and Chocolate Sprinkles. This is a true delight and perfect way to enjoy the Balboa Island experience. We love to sit and enjoy the delicious treat, watch the foot traffic, and listen to the Catholic Church bell ring the hours. Service was quick, polite, and as always, the food was delicious and competitively priced. Keep up the good work!!!
Best Balboa Bananas and bars. The family has been coming here for decades and all their goods are delicious. I go for the double dipped Balboa Bar with Butter brickle toppings myself.
Been coming here since I was a child. Favorite place in Orange County and Balboa. Always delicious and the sprinkle covered chocolate frozen banana is the best!! Will go here for as long as I can every time I visit!
Amazing frozen bananas dipped in chocolate with your pic of two toppings.
Dad's donut and bakery is most well known for its small scale "rivalry" with Sugar and Spice, the only other banana stand on Balboa Island, located not 20 meters away. While I've never actually taken the time to look up which was the original, I think it's safe to say at this point it does not matter - both are good, and as a local the only determining factor in the one I choose is the length of line. Both frozen bananas and balboa bars taste the same, and the cost is practically the same (with dad's being
Great ice cream and donuts, and of course their famous hipo sugar cookies!
Dad's is the best ! They have great Balboa bars, frozen bananas, ice cream , and soft serve ice cream. They have the cutest hippopotamus cookies. I love a good cookie and coffee in the morning. They are always friendly and have great customer service.
The sever who Asian lady, maybe she is owner, was kind and friendly. Price is reasonable. I ordered one hot tea, one cup of coffee, ham and cheese croissant, and bear claw. All the foods was under $10 it was amazing. And their decaf coffee is good with creams also the two breads was tasty.
Tried the frozen banana (a.k.a. ?Balboa bar?)?it?s a frozen banana. Not sure what all the hype is really about. If you love biting into popsicles then maybe it will be for you but it?s not for me. Nothing else in this place seemed worth coming back for either.
My Grandfather lived on the island when I was 4/6 yrs.old. he would walk me by the hand every day to get a frozen banana, that was 56yrs.ago. just found there Web page, it brought back very fond memories of the time with my Grandfather. I hope to return soon! I can taste it now!
So I tried the balboa bar for the first time and it was heavenly. I was a bit overwhelmed at first because I had too many toppings options but I highly recommend this: Get the balboa bar, dipped in chocolate with almonds and the pop by the Starbucks and add some cinnamon powder ??
I get a frozen banana every time I'm on the island. Great every thing all around. I've been going there for over 20 years. Don't miss out!
Balboa bar or frozen banana? I can never decide which one to get. They are both awesome! You must experience Balboa island and then you end your experience here.
I shared a chocolate dipped banana with my husband with almonds and peanuts, my biggest recommendation is to each get your own banana so that you can choose what toppings you get on it! :) It was fun and will bring friends back next time we're in the area.
This place is a mix of frozen bananas, ice cream and donuts. The products were varied, the price was good and the quality was good. The donuts were ok. I didn't find it amazing but it's a nice option if you're nearby and want to grab an ice cream or frozen banana.
If you ever wondered what the frozen bananas from the banana stand in the TV 'Arrested Development' taste like this is one of 2 places that it was based on. This place in particular sells a lot of other things than just the frozen banana but the line of people is usually for the banana. S, M, L, or XL banana sizes with various toppings of your choice come at a "Newport" price. Seriously, you can make these at home but you're too lazy to so you shill out the $4 to try one out and it's tastes adequate.
First time eating frozen banana! Was delicious. Made it more enticing on an island! I would definitely recommend it and go back for more nxt frozen cheesecake ??
Great stop when you are on the island. If you want a beat claw, coffee, or other morning treat. We stop by here every time we are in Newport. I highly recommend that you make this part of your visit.
Love the sprinkle frozen banana & the balboa bar
Balboa bars are good here, you can put unlimited toppings. The place nearby(sugar n spice) also has balboa bars but I believe you can only choose 2 toppings there.
Love Love this place. My husband and I have been going here for years. As a matter of fact, we have been going here since we were dating 20 years ago. The owner and the employees have been so courteous and respectful . They know us by name and are very excited to see us. This Business is properly maintained and very clean.
The hibbo cookies! We go every time we're in town to get a hibbo cookie. So yummy!
Good cinnamon rolls and blueberry cake. Always good
I was very saddened with to my visit to "dad's". My ice cream had fallen upon the floor, and I was rejected of a much deserved refund! I've never been more disappointed in my life. I angy. Angyier than words can describe, yet I will still try to describe this feeling of despair. I feel like I have walked into a never ending abyss of darkness!!! This absolute hell hole of a cash grab stole my overpriced raspberry ice cream!!!! I will never regain these wasted moments of my life, I now have PTSD and will neve
The best tradition on the island. Donuts in the morning and frozen bananas for dessert.
Fabulous fresh donuts and other baked goodies. Great raisin cinnamon rolls and they are famous for the hippo cookies frosted in different colors. Super nice staff
Such a tradition!! Been going here for over 40 years. Even though I'm a healthy eater who virtually never indulges, i always get a frozen banana. Not much in this world is better. ?? ??
An old time favorite. Good ice cream, shakes, frozen bananas, donuts, and cookies
I've never been inside, I don't know what they have, I only go here for the frozen banana's. When we are in town we get banana's and go for a walk. Those amazing banana's are a fantastic part our day.
Awesome place to grab some snacks and ice creams. They have the best frozen bananas and Balboa ice cream bars. Definitely hits the spot.
The name implies they sell Donuts which of course they do along with other sweet treats like ice cream and baked goods but when you visit Dad's Donuts you cannot leave without buying a hippopotamus cookie you absolutely have to have to have to try one my sister and I are absolutely obsessed with them they are so good you will love them and so will any kids you know! They also make them in different shapes as well
A cute banana stand. It's nice you can choose your toppings but it seemed to be overhyped. The chocolate was very thin and the banana was frozen so solid it was difficult to bite.
Great frozen Bananas. Nice variety of deserts. Nice place to stop as you enjoy Balboa Island.
No visit is complete to Newport Beach without a visit to Dad's for a Balboa Bar. Creamy ice cream bars and the toppings are delicious.
I love this place the people are so friendly and it feels like I am getting fresh home made food everytime!! ?? I have been going there since I was a little kids. Thank you for all these years that have been consistent with the best treats!! ??
Easily the best frozen banana I've ever had!
Lots of peanuts stuck to the thick coating of hand-dipped chocolate coating OB the perfectly ripe frozen banana!
Great way to enjoy a classic treat (frozen bananna, or hand dipped ice cream bars) on beautifull Balboa Island.
Great frozen bananas!
This place is charming and such a throwback to times past. Love the balboa bars and always get one when I am on the island.
There customer service is amazing those ladies are always ready to help, right when you walk in all the stuff they have that make you look around and choose the delicious ice cream.
We love the frozen bananas!!! This last visit we had hippo cookies and donuts. We loved them too.
Yummy pistachio ice cream but had been craving frozen yogurt. None on the island??
Awesome place for frozen bananas.
